NEED ADVICE - SUBARU LEGACY WAGON - Good Family Car?

Postby nicholaz53 » January 26th, 2012, 11:33 am

Good Day Everyone,

I am currently looking to purchase another vehicle - a family vehicle - I was looking at either the new toyota corolla or the subaru legacy wagon.

I need your advice - thanks.

^ ^ ^ I would pick a Subaru Legacy GT Wagon (w/Turbo motor) but it all depends. Are you buying a new or "foreign used" car? If "foreign used", you will always have to "take a chance" on the quality/reliability. This will always vary from car to car... whatever the model.

We bought a "foreign used" Legacy 2.0 GT Turbo Wagon.. BP5 model. It suffered from severe vibration when applying brakes. Problem was pad deposits on rotors maybe from overheated/badly "bedded in" pads previously. Caught hell until I resurfaced the rotors and "bedded in" a set of new OEM pads... NO ISSUES since.... (Just wish they were Brembos!)

The Legacy was a GREAT buy!... Even for an ol' Evo fanatic like me. Reasonable milage if you don't "cane it"...Hauls AZZ when required (often!)... Great "ride"... etc. etc.

Nope, its NOT perfect. It still understeers like a pig... (just like ALL Subbies) and I prefer Brembo calipers but IMHO its a GREAT family car. No regrets at all. Just remember... ONLY buy the Turbo model.

My $0.02¢

What's wrong with the basic non-turbo model ?

Nothing is wrong with it, but one day someone is going to fly past you with the turbo model and you would wish you spent the extra..

Had that experience with my 2.9L volvo S80.. It wasn't slow by any means, but the Volvo T6 would smoke it

Subaru legacy is the perfect family car. The interior is pretty family oriented, it's pretty comfortable. Enough space for kids. The turbocharged engine hauls azzz, so it's a pretty good vehicle for family and still wild enough to enjoy yourself. Engines are pretty well built. There's tons of parts for engines and drive train so you shouldn't be down for long.

Comparing a legacy to a corolla is strange in my book eh, but here goes...

It's a really good car. Tons of safety features, huge interior, comfortable.

I would call the turbo model high maintenance simply because you need to stick to the maintenance schedule. Strictly so.
Parts are readily available, maybe a bit on the expensive side compared to a corolla. If gas mileage is a concern, stick to the toyota. The scooby requires premium and drinks gas if you have a heavy right foot.

If you're buying RORO, look out for rolled back mileage. IT can shaft you in the long run. Better to try to locate a local used with documented service history.
