Postby de stig » January 15th, 2010, 7:39 am

Anyone knows of a Garage / Company specialized in repairing power steering Racks,?? one side of my rack is leaking mech say its the "seal" (in tnt thats the answer to every leak :? ) or should i just buy a f/used rack and save myself the hassle?

Foreign used is always the easy way out. It would be better to pull it down and change all the seals, that way all is brand new again.

Remember its a hydraulic shaft that runs back and forth through the rack. This is the part protected by the boot rubber. Maybe he was referring to that.

I dont see it necessary for it to be rechromed, once it is in good condition, but it is always a good preventative method nonetheless.

The seals themselves should not be expensive, you looking at a $500 job with labour.

Well, chroming is what will run up your bill. Seals alone would prob cost you about 200 and well labour is variable. I do my own stuff so obviously I would not quote a rediculous price for labour.

Hmm will check FSM to c how "easy" this job is ,kinda swinging down f/used because of time constraints , but it seems most mech dont like working steeering racks.

will look them up in phonebook call and get details , ideally i would like to drop off the car , they remove the rack (if necessary) repair and reinstall and drive away happy , any other service providers would still be welcomed for comparison

tnx

i would recommened F/Used and done..

make sure u get one with the rubbers and everything intact. as well as check the shaft for slight play

wen replacing..make sure its retensioned. the steering would be stiff for a while

but it will grove in and u got yourself a like new rack all over again

that should not cost u more than $800 TOPS

janfar gave great advice. i do my own thing too..so search around

Anil Sooknanan on the forum here cud handle that for u real easy too.

Is it possible to also repair steering boxes? The box on my old model b2500 has a very slight leak...
