Need advice on ES8 D15 to D17 Conversion

Good day tuners,

The head gasket in my 2004 ES blew, so I'm looking at some different options. I was thinking of converting to a D17 one time. What I wanna know is if I just buy a D17 head and block, if all my other bolt on's will work. Also, my 1.5 is a Non-VTEC, so If i get a D17 VTEC, will I need to change the ECU too?

I think "fras" on the forum did something like this. You need to get the matching key and brain for the D17. They used the D15 ecu because the D17 ecu won't recognize you key and it won't start.

Thanks, I was talking to him just after I posted this. I'd need to get my Key programmed for the new ecu, as I don't have the option of using back the ECU from my 1.5, because my 1.5 is a non vtec.

Any idea where I can get the key reprogrammed?

Other than Honda, talk to the guys who do chip keys the might be able to help. 7443427 ask for CJ he might able to do it.

Aight cool, thanks bro. I talked to Honda already, they doing it for $700 plus VAT per key, so the price nt that bad, but I will have to tow the car there.

Yea that price nt bad, better than I was expecting, but to do the 2 wud be like $1600 plus the charge to tow the car there. I'd give cj a call and see, I'd rather if somebody can come by the garage and do it, that way I don't need to take time off of work

Can anyone tell me if I'll need the harness from the 17 VTEC seeing as my D15 is a non-VTEC? I know I'll need the VTEC ECU, but what about the harness??

You can just drop in the head and block.
U would have to wire the v tech Solioniod . Or use as is without v tech

Could you elaborate on this a little, I don't wanna run it without Vtech because it may cause damage further down the line as the engine may be running lean. How do I wire up the Vtech Soleniod? Or where can I go to get it done. Someone mentioned to me about using a MSD RPM switch, however that could be a lil tricky as well because it doesn't depend on oil pressure etc, and the VTEC would engage at the set RPM regardless.

If you don't have the solenoid, switch and the brain doesn't have the drivers for Vtec it won't kick in. The brain looks at speed, rpm, Tps and oil pressure to work Vtec through switch and solenoid.

Why not go back d15? It's not that bad.

I might hadda do that. But my d15 srsly lacking power, failure to climb hills

You said the head gasket blew. Then that would cause that loss of power. My cousin has one and I work on it, yes it's slow but it has no problem making hills etc.

Well idk, I just find it have problems climbing steep-ish hills ever since I buy the car, (going on 2 years now) unless the head gasket was gone since then. But I doubt, because I never had any problems until recently.

Ended up just changing the head gasket, too many complications with the conversion as the engine may nt have been able to start when I switched the brain. It would have been possible if mine was a VTEC to being with tho, as I could have used back my original brain. But as it wasn't VTEC I would have needed to use the brain from the D17

Going to do this swap next weekend(d15y6 non vtec engine and non cvt trans replacing it with d17a vtec engine and trans with ecu and harness complete in a 2002 es8. Will post feedback to this thread!

all we did was change head & block (1.7vtec) and reused 1.5vtec ecu & harness

by chance does anyone know where i may find a 1.7vtec manual front half or complete conversion (engine, gearbox, axles, harness, ecu...)

it is not hard. you need to find a ecu pinout for the d17, add a new vtec wire and repin the ecu. plus you would have to repin the injectors cause the d17 is a multi point fuel ignition set up and depending on the d15 you have may be duel point ignition.if i was you and want more power i would go with a d16z6. i have a d16z6 making some great power( including a power adder).
