Hey guys, i'm thinking about purchasing an ek3 soon as a starter vehicle. What are your thoughts on such a vehicle in terms of reliability, maintenance and economy? Any info would be greatly appreciated. 0X

dont buy the CVT models, CVTs are high maintenance and not that reliable.. stick to the auto's or manual's..

EK3 gas... 350km from $100 super gas.

EK3 suspension... it being a FWD and in the economy-car category can suffer from bad shocks, bushings and ball joints. Using only original or aftermarket (Race) upgrades, you can have the car running pretty good for a couple years, worry-free.

EK3 engine... after 100,000km you should do the standard 100k service. after 200,000 you may need to do some more drastic work. engine can start to burn oil around this mileage. no performance loss tho.

EK3 transmission... i have a gearbox. they are pretty darn tough.

EK3 A/C... real problems. nvr as cold as, say, a honda accord of the same age. i think it's the half-sized a/c evaporator in a hot climate.

EK3 interior... durable. check for rips in back seat, worn driver seat.

Thanks for the info TK. what can be done about the a/c if it turns out to be a problem..... say if i want to get it to :shocked!: freezing :skurry:

you said 350km per 100 super gas. u sound like u have one currently or previously. what engine type u had? redman say it depends on the engine.

what about prices for parts...... original/aftermarket... i doubt i would find bess condition original parts for that mdoel so i should be prepared to cut a hole in mih pocket? mih hand would break when ah dip in mih wallet cause ah hit rock bottom?

I disagree with "depends on engine' i think it depends on your driving style.
EK3 is a reliable car with ok resale value, parts are readily available and not badly priced.
Great choice..

 it depends on ur drivin style and the type of engine u have..
some engines are more economical than others..

obviously a dohc vtec engine gonna use more fuel than a 1.5 economy non vtec engine..sighhh

only issue i have seen that could be a pain is the crank shaft pulley and nut .they get loose easily if not tightened properly with the correct amount of torque.

now please note. this will only happen if not done correctly... sooo exprienced mech and you have nothing to worry abt

I am on my third ek3 right now. One was manual, other auto and the present one CVT. I believe once car is maintained properly and no shortcuts taken, you will not regret the purchase. I will only sell my Ek3 to buy an EK4. Nothing esle.

i havent figured this one out as yet :-(

jumpkickjoe wrote:you said 350km per 100 super gas. u sound like u have one currently or previously. what engine type u had? redman say it depends on the engine.

yes, i currently own a 1.5 SOHC 3 Stage VTEC.

i only buy original. the best used parts are ten years old for his car. i haven't had to change anything i changed other than shocks. but my shocks arent OEM hondas, they're tokico adjustables and these are noted to have short lifespans.
