B18C problem

Having a problem with my b18c(ITR) engine.
When the car first starts in the morn and the engine is cold it responds excellent, throttle response is great etc.
During the day however the response is somewhat sluggish and at times there is a noticeable flat spot. These symptoms occur randomly and at times the car responds well.
Any suggestions?????

could be numerous things...from spark plugs to O2 sensor...any sputtering or mods etc?

Already changed plugs, plug wires, coil, new battery and tried a different ECU. On occasion the car would sputter but for just one second then back to normal. If the O2 sensor was defective wouldn't that throw a check light? Also had a scan done which turned up nothing.
Engine was recently rebuilt but this problem was there b4 and remains.

was there before the rebuild ?

sounding more electrical

original engine for the car /

engine was in another car with the problem (IF YES ) did you used the harness from the car

did you check the module in the Dizzy ?

Yes the problem was there before rebuild.
Not original engine for the car, engine is a foreign used one.
Module was changed as well.
Can anybody recommend a good mech to check through the car?.... in the west preferably.
Thanks for responses thus far.

CHECK FUEL FILTER N PUMP

Fuel filter was cleaned(washable type filter). Fuel pressure is good so i assume the pump is good (aftermarket walbro pump).

compression and leakdown test
check your TPS voltage and report back

if i have the correct answer paypal me $5.00

and what was done in the rebuild
what block and headwork

Posted: October 27th, 2008, 7:17 pm
by CBR HONDA
The harness that came with the b18c engine was used.
I doubt it has to do with the distributor cuz the coil, module, rotor and cap were all changed.
Compression is good. TPS seemed to be good when scan was done.
WRT rebuild.... b18c engine> no head work or block work was done. CTR pistons used (higher comp), new rings, new valve seals, cam seals etc. I rebuilt the engine cuz it started to burn a bit of oil (only on high rpm this happened).
NOTE: this prob was there before the rebuild. Since the build the car performs better but the problem still there.
Any more suggestions?

borrow someone ecu and try it

ah i see where the problem lies
good luck

i will give you a tip
what kind of fuel is used?

civic R pistons in your b18c will net you arround or close to 13:1 compression.

do not trust the online calculators as they have not factored the deck height.

you are detonating/pre igniting.

why was the engine burning oil?

the engine will work better when cool.
thus being the high compression and i am sure you are running lean.

what do your spark plugs tell you?

pull them and report back

Oh geed, CTR Pistons in a B18C!

But you say the problem was before the Piston change?

I have a Stock OBD2 ecu you could try.

What is the TPS voltage with Throttle Closed?

I dont think the stock ecu would be mapped for that high compression

^ also check the knock sensor if u still have it

cleriq tell de man B anything in vtec is burn out
VTEC LUV OIL

vtec does use oil
but not excessive amounts

Only used premium fuel. No sign of pre igniting and the knock sensor still there. The spark plugs appear to be burning good (not lean). WRT the car working better when cold VS hot> this as well as the other symptoms were there BEFORE the build so i doubt it has anything to do with the higher comp.
Not sure bout the TPS voltage but when i had the scan done i was told that all the sensors were fine.
Already tried another OBD2 ecu and same issues. Was thinking of going with a management system but i dont wanna spend that kinda $$ unless i know for sure it will sort out all the probs> dont wanna install that and then realise nothin solved.

if the symtoms were there before the build then why wasnt it diagnosed before doing the build?

also

was a scan done when the engine was cold or hot when you are experiencing the problem

how is the voltage from the alternator when the engine is hot compared to cold

also what about the grounding has that been checked

we trying to help you and you 'doubting'

you running 13:1 compression on pump gas with no tune, and you expect the car to even run good?

horse :out:

by red_dragon
SR - correct voltage could be breaking down due to old or poor wiring

B20VTEK wrote:you running 13:1 compression on pump gas with no tune, and you expect the car to even run good?

sensors can be good but caliberated wrong

when the car is hot with no load does it happen ?

ever checked the fuel regulator ?

Thanks for the help fellas. Anybody wanna recommend a good mech to check tru the car??
WRT 13:1 comp> i seeing all kinda different things when i check online. I dont think it that high though cuz no pinging etc. I thought comp would be just below 12:1??
Should be getting a power FC soon
Will update.

like i said
the online compression calculators do not factor in the deck height of ctr pistons in other blocks than the ctr.

Try some race gas in the car, c16 and see if there is any improvement.

dont forget to reset the ecu when you put in the gas
