Civic Type-R (EK9) Restoration Project...Updated 27 FEB 2013

Postby Reamos DC5 » May 26th, 2012, 9:23 pm

As per the title, I have been looking for an EK9 for quite a while now. Even before I could get my hands on one, I believe I got most of the parts for the supposedly factory condition rebuild even before I bought the car. But then again, I really don’t think a Honda lover, or in fact any car lover could ever have “most of the parts”…..for some reason the part bills just don’t seem to stop.

A substantial amount of funds were spent on this project, and after years of saving for a dream, it doesnt feel that hard on my pocket. I will not disclose how much I spent exactly, but you will be able to read and see almost everything that will be installed. There is no question as to whether I should have built something else. This project is EK9 specific and even though a DC5 was probably an option, the EK9 has always been one of my dream cars.

If you have the time to follow the project, you would realize that the project is being done to perfection. I am taking my time overlooking every aspect of the car from the inside out. Anything unacceptable that comes in my way, it is either repaired or replaced with brand new OEM parts….once I can afford it.

I got PBM-6564 at a reasonable price. It was actually in good overall condition having done over 180,000 kms. Did I really have to restore it? No. Was anything wrong with engine and gearbox components? Not really. It was well maintained and needed minor servicing. But this is where me being meticulous comes in. It was the reality of knowing that this is a used CTR 1997, and had 4 previous owners. The original engine was removed, a boosted B16A installed, and then the original put back in. And yes we mean the B16B.

I know at some point it was getting a good work out, but I would really never know the true story behind the car. Was a B16A really put in? or was it the B16B that was boosted? What else was tampered with? Any accidents? Right now it doesn’t matter, as everything will be repaired or changed.

Well let me get straight to what all you Honda fanatics are probably looking forward to….progress pictures.

Comments both positive and negative are welcome and I would love to know what you think and what suggestions you may have. Thanks for reading!

Reamos.

I love it.... I am trying to get mine up to a CTR level also. Hopefully I can by this time next year. But what you said was so true, as a honda guy you could never have all the parts. I was so stressed in getting parts that it dawned to me to just bring in a CTR and transfer everything to the ek3 but that would have cost well over 130k.
I wish I could get an OEM CTR like you did.

Below, the dashboard had to be removed for 99-00 a/c control conversion....NOT an easy swap!
10 points for tuner "Red Dragon" who completed the install with all systems up and running.

* the LEV console is temporary, OEM EK9 part to follow later on.

very nice Reamos

Moses you can bolt every part from a Ek9 to a ek3 , 4 and it will never handle the same

save your paper .. go B18 or cheaper B20 Stock with Gearbox and every piece from ultra racing and you set....

Completed 99-00 Front Body conversion. As we all know, Bumper, Fenders, Bonnet, Headlamps and Grill need to be changed...minor adjustments for fitment needed..

You would see 2 types of body parts. I made a huge mistake buying Taiwanese body parts as the fitment was poor. i ended up taking it all off and replacing with OEM.

^ thanks man,

will be painted in Type R championship white (NH0)

the matte black that you are seeing is the taiwanese body parts which were taken off.

^ thanks E...and yes Dragon is correct. A marked difference in handling between EK3/4 and the 9.

Red I know that putting all the ek9 parts on my ek3 will never make it a typer. So i might just stick to stock for now and jump ship next year to EVO
