Avoid the flushes,residues left behind can screw up the new change.

Usually you add silicon oil when the fan spins 'slack' when the engine is turned off.
The oil makes the fan 'stiff' again and hence making it spin as it should and so performing its cooling function as intended.Sounds like the fan needs changing.
Those engines are really tough,you don't have to be seen by a mechanic every week fixing something.GA16 gave some good info,if you decide to go that way.There was an L18 in wallers a while ago that did 14secs or so,but thats was with alot of mods.

Just take out the cluth fan.As for the electrics,you can get a powerful one and use it by itself.Look around for a denso fan or the like,very powerful stuff,as well as slim design.It would free up some good horses as well. Yep if the teeth have wear then it could cause that(That grinding noise).Also if the brushes in the starter go bad that can happen,so check that out it not that expensive.
