Brass or Aluminum, your choice. Brass is cheaper but Aluminum cools better and is lighter. There is a guy here selling the aluminum ones and most radiator shops stock the brass ones.

You can use any temperature bulb as long as it is a "D2R" bulb.
The D2R refer to the bulb that will fit the stock ballast the car came with and before you ask NO other bulb will fit in the ballast.
It sounding like the vvl has stuck.
Easy way to find out, unplug the harness it and and just connect and unconnect it directly to a power source.
If it's NOT stuck you will hear a clicking noise when you power it on/off i.e. the vvl coming on and off.
