Nice, do you know if your pressure switch was 20/40 ?
If so that would have been the prob, it would have barely put any water into the pressure tank.
If you adjusted it, I will work but not optimal as the spring range in them are fairly narrow band

fellas need some assistance.

Woke up yesterday morning to find pump running(pentax smarthead) it would not cut off, I got some time yesterday to test it . With all water valves off the fault light triggered but the pump would not cut off to reset manually,so i decided to open it up and have a look.
The circuit board looked fine, opened the diaphram as well and that looked in alright condition, behind that however is a spring loaded magnet which i could only assume is the trigger for the on and off for the priming, cleaned that and reassembled.
Pump came on primed good and worked for about 5 mins before it began staying on again with all water valves closed.

There's no information out there on the smarthead units so this exercise is strictly for knowledge and to assist other in the future.
So let me know if anyone has experience on this,What do you guys think it is?
Is it a faulty board
Damaged Diaphragm ( mine looks good)
Magnetic pressure switch

This advise is strictly for testing as i already bought a new smart head. I would really like to replace the damaged part on the old smarthead and test, as I would like to know how the actual device works

Based on the age of the Smarthead, it's probably a combination of both the Smarthead base( where the magnet that triggers the circuit board is housed) and the circuit board itself.

Wise choice to change the entire Smarthead.

You can put the new circuit board in the old Smarthead to test if that was the issue.

Thanks wheelbarrow, already had that in mind as its just two screws holding the board. If its not that i wont mess with the magnet on the new one. Will test and get back to the forum as i have sometime.

I am interested in how the smartheads work also, I have a new unused one and would like to know
if it can be used simply as a safety switch in case there is no water in the line so the pump will not run.
My tank is very far from pump so putting a float switch is a pain.

I had planned to rig up a car oil pressure switch to trigger a relay to protect pump if there is no water in the intake
as well as light a bulb so easy to tell if wasa dead or low pressure vs tank empty.
Bought the oil pressure switch and fittings but haven't gotten around to it yet

Good idea - Cool project :D

Give us some details how you plan to set it up.

Shouldn't the water pump be close to the water tank ?

The water pump is suppose to "push" the water not "pull" it.

Already scrapped one of those. It has a magnet that moves and allows it to function when there is water pressure.

I already wired up a Goulds pressure switch and bypassed all that rubbish. Tested and have rest down when my current pump shits.

I have a plan for a rainwater setup that I might use it on.

The water tank does not have to be ideally close to the pump. Elevation/gravity plays a role here, once sufficient water reaches the pump inlet there should be no problem, this is where the one way valve on the inlet plays an important role.

Pugboy so from my break down and trying to understand the smarthead, there is a one way value on the bottom of the unit, this holds water in the system , behind the board is a diaphragm ( flat bladder) with a spring loaded to a trigger that leads to the magnet switch and this leads back to the board. Want to believe when outlet is opened the diaphragm looses pressure which looses tension on the spring which triggers the magnet to switch pump on, this is your cut on/off and fault trigger. I could be wrong eh so don't quote me on it.
I believe it can be used as a trigger if you have a lack of water, but it is going to have to be close to the pump, just like bladder system pumps , the tank pump cant be far from the pump otherwise you ll have issues in pressure and cause the pump to cycle to often

Ted whats your setup lke,you used a pump switch alongside the smarthead to control pressures and avoid magnetic triggers?
Really interested in understanding that.

Jus to inform you guys on my current situation,i replaced the new board in old smart head and I had no issues with the pump not cuttng off. Thanks wheelbarrow you were correct as usual

A pressure tank is important because it keeps water pressure at a constant level. It also keeps the water and air separated. Without these features the water pump would turn on and off quickly – a problem called cycling – which can quickly burn out the pump motor. Hence, pump needs to be close to water tank .

Nice, the only thing with using the smarthead as a supply fault sensor is the size
Ideally the intake for a pump should be at least 1" esp if tank is far.

On another note, I have been using a cycle stop valve for over a year now

http://www.cyclestopvalves.com/prod_csv125.html

It is essentially a mechanical version of a smarthead
it keeps the pump output at a constant pressure, so instead of the pump starting from zero and ramping up high
to pressurize the pressure tank then cutting off
it only ramps up to a certain pressure eg 50psi then keeps the pump running at that pressure
Only when water is stopped being used/demand then it cuts off.

Advantage is less stop/start of the motor which burn more current and put load on it
also since pump is not allowed to supply at very high pressures less load again and less current
smallest cheapest pressure tank is also only needed.

This basically how the electronic smarthead works
inverter aircon units work in similar manner by regulating the compressor motor speed.

Nice infor pugboy
redvevo you talking about two separate things.
The pump pressure tank is supposed to be mounted close to the pump, the pump however does not need to be connected close to the water tank.
I ve seen cases of water tanks over 100ft from premise and pump located on premise and it works flawless without cycling.

My tank is about 70ft away used 1" pipe to pump intake.

Pump cycling is usually a function of intermittent demand and pressure tank not large enough to buffer these intermittent demand surges.

I removed all stock wiring and redid it. Using a regular pressure switch and no smarthead. I'll need a ballast tank else the pump would continue to switch in and out.

Pics tomorrow

You're always better off in the long term with a pressure tank installed alongside your water pump.

anyone has reviews on the pumps from QPSL
the brands are pumpman and shimge.

they are pretty cheap and QPSL claims they use 33% less electricity

also where has the cheapest price of goulds(usa)

Both seem To work well

Pump.jpg

Will this work. Share your views....

I am thinking about doing this for the following reasons.
1. If it works it should be more reliability than a smart-head.
2. It will allow the pump to keep running once any tap is opened. (Save energy- less inrush)

that is essentially a cycle stop valve
but the technicality is that if two taps open at the same time they will only get approx 25psi each
as the regulator doesn't have capability to have higher volume
at least that is the technicality from what I have ready

Hey folks I'm looking for a good residential pump that's also silent.I've read through this thread, still not decided, nice info here btw.
I was looking at the DAB booster silent 3. Anyone used these or have any info. Ramlagans has them and the specs sound nice

If the pump and the outlet line was flushed, check your tanks for sediment. Chlorine that is added to the water by WASA can cause the iron present in ground water to precipitate out as ferric oxide.

Good night, I recently purchased a Leo ajm60s smart head pump. It's just 2months old to be precise. Tonight it started making a traveling sound & the failure light was coming on.....
Is it that somehow purchased a faulty pump? What could be possibly causing this problem? Should I take back the pump?
Thanks in advance

Stick with brands that are tried and tested to last. Goulds, Pentax, Dab. That Leo pump is headache. Return it if you can and spend the extra to get one of the brands I mentioned. Get one with a pressure tank.

I have one of the Shimge 1.5 HP installed over 2 years and works trouble free thus far.

Can easily buy 2 of these compared to a Goulds pump.

Previously used Gould - no complaint on performance, only issue is cost to purchase when need to replace.
