Sharing Plex Media Servers in Trinidad

Postby nemo » October 20th, 2015, 2:44 am

Anyone running a Plex server with remote access and willing to share? Let's exchange usernames. Even if you don't run your own server you're free to access mine. Just send me your Plex username.
Go to Plex.tv and create a free account.

My library isn't fantastic but if we all share we can build a decent network.

Actually S_2NR it's safe. You the owner of the server controls what each user has access to. Also I'm sure you have a proper firewall setup.
I have a synology server running Plex with remote access. I have multiple users accessing at a time and I can monitor activity and end point connections (devices)
You can also block/delete access to any user at anytime.

The problem occurs when people start sharing access from multiple end points and bog down your server. But then it's a simple delete of that particular device from access.

You got access nemo, let me know what you think. Some content may give you some trouble as I may not have transcoded it yet.

KarbonFiber your library is incredible, especially your TV shows and the quality is so far excellent. Only issue is that either your server is heavily utilised or your upload bandwidth is insufficient because I'm buffering a lot at original quality but no worries cause I can lower my remote streaming quality to 2Mbps or 1.5Mbps and still view at very good quality.

Did you transcode most of this stuff yourself?

Nemo, it's not server load. I'm sure it's the movies causing the issue and not the tv shows. I have not transcoded all the movies yet but the tv shows should all be good to go. My connection is a 170/25 so I can take a lot :)

Yes I transcode myself using iskysoft imedia converter. But the TV shows I get in the format I need so never had to transcode those.

Yes it was in fact particular movies causing the issue. I am able to stream at original quality and like I said before it's excellent. Are you in Trinidad? Who you getting that kinda bandwidth from? I know Digicel business fibre gives you up to about 100/30.

What OS runs on the Synology server?

It's in the U.S. nemo, Comcast.

The synology runs its own proprietary OS and very secure. One of the better NAS systems out there. It's a 12 terabyte setup.

Heard of Synology but never really checked out their products. What kind of processor and memory specs on the device?

I'm running FreeNAS with the Plex plugin on a regular PC at the moment.

How does Drobo stack up to Synology for remote movie streaming like this?

Duane, remote streaming should be the same on a Drobo. Transcoding thought will be an issue as the 5N does not support realtime transcoding. Synology supports realtime transcoding but the quality varies in models. The unit I use has support for transcoding up to 720 (realtime). It will transcode at 1080p but it's not supported and as nemo will tell you, it will buffer like crazy because the processor just can't handle it.
There are newer models that support 1080p realtime transcoding however.

Mantis and Ninjabilly thanks for sharing as well. What kind of hardware are you running? What's your bandwidth like?

I didn't expect this kind of response to be honest but you guys are out there doing some cool stuff. More people should jump on and share even if you're running Plex on Windows, sharing just a small folder of movies and online now and then.

KarbonFiber are you even able to backup all that data? What's your storage up to at present? I'm only at 3.5TB so far.

50% use so far nemo, backups created on externals. Will most likely get another synology and daisy chain them.

thanks! great info there

I see there are Synology NAS models that support transcoding of 4K UHD video

Yeah that upload will severely limit your ability to share to a wide audience but you got to work with what you have.

Duane, yes the synology can transcode 4k but Plex does not fully support it yet. I've been following that to see when/if Plex will ever get the coding right to get my 4k TV :). Was now looking at future versions and there will be updates to transcoding.

An out of the box NAS with the ability to transcode 4k might be tough to find and would come at a high price. At the same price or less, it might be a good idea to consider building your own box with more RAM, processing power and in a case than can support more drives. The FreeNAS open source OS is one very popular option but I'm sure there are others.

This article I came recently across might be worth a read. I will admit I only looked at the Synology recently after checking out KarbonFiber's server so I can't vouch for any criticisms.

nemo you are correct, as of right now a 4k NAS is not a viable option and custom build is the way to go. I do see this changing soon as 4k becomes more mainstream.

FreeNAS is one of the better open source OS option, but the UI lacks and there is a lot of tinkering to even come to synology OS. Just my 2c.

ok so I run Plex currently on my iMac 5K and stream it to my devices on the LAN and remotely to my mom and dad in Jamaica to their Roku, iPad etc

I have a FLOW 150Mb / 10Mb connection and everything runs smoothly, the iMac barely breaks a sweat streaming to 5 devices at once. ALL the movies are 1080p H264 AC3 5.1 ~384Kb/s.

I have a really good gigabit aluminum PC full tower with a 800watt PSU running a
Core i7 2600K
ASUS P8P67 Workstation mainboard - USB 3.0 and SATA III 6GB/sec and 2 x16 PCIe
Corsair 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz
EVGA GTX 460 1GB DDR5 SSC
Intel X25 120GB SSD
Corsair A70 CPU Cooler

just sitting there doing nothing - enough space in there for about 10 5.25" HDDs
I could build my own NAS.

I need a NAS solution for the home office anyway since my ReadyNAS NV+ kicked the bucket after 6 years.

Problem is I have zero experience with FreeNAS or setting up one. I'm the type that would prefer an unmanaged switch over a managed one - reason for switching entirely to Apple too, it just works.

So what do you suggest?
