My calves were sore and I had about 30lbs of camera on my back so the hike was hell.
Probably 45mins up a steep rock path.

You're a brave man, I always wondered what the path was like looking from the church.

Those pines make for a beautiful setting.

Love the pics.

I was hoping to post some really different pics as I spent just under 2 weeks in Thailand last month..visited many different places many off the tourist path, chased by wild elephants (we were in a Hilux though but still had to do it in reverse) and took some really good people, scenery & wildlife shots beyond what I would usually do as I didnt think I would go back there.

Anyway seeing that i never get around to going through my pics etc and posting them I decided I was going to take the memory cards with me as I was going to be away for a week for work. Never got a chance to do it cause work seemed to be never-ending reach home only to find the memory cards gone/missing from my bag  . Really not a good feeling.

I never really did it before but from now on I'll be making a copy of my photos until i get a proper chance to go through them. Anybody have any recommendations on what to use to back up photos while on the go? I dont travel with a laptop and sometimes I may not have any power for a few days so keep that in mind... also nothing too expensive, saving up to go again but for longer.

Shoot a camera with dual card slots is your best bet. No extra equipment needed. Keep two SSD's with you in separate enclosures and back up to each separately every time you shoot and keep them in different locations incase one is stolen or destroyed.

Some I used a HRT polariser but that's it. I want to try out the ND at the tracking station though. Once I get free time.

Why such a high iso Richard? Especially on a d90

Why not? It did what I wanted it to do. At f/2.8 I needed that iso to get anything but black in the shadows. If you are accustomed to shooting at high ISO you will realize that you can kill noise with overexposure, which is what I essentially did with the face. Basically unleashed noise reduction, selectively sharpened the eyes and mouth and tamed highlights and left the noise alone in the shadows for the grainy effect. The full size picture is pretty noisy still but as I re-sampled it smaller to post here the face smoothed out and sharpened even more.

It looks good but the noise is a bit distracting as it isn't uniform across the highlights.
Here's 2 recent randoms.

what would you all recommend as a good starter dslr? was looking at a Nikon D3300 or Canon Rebel T5

mostly for recreational/outdoor use, car shows etc. If i want to get into it more seriously i want to be able to simply upgrade lenses initially.

max budget, about US$500 for cam and lens.

Any advice will be appreciated.

There are some pretty sweet canon t5 bundles with 2 lenses on amazon now for about your price range.
On the nikon side, the d3300 is good, but i would spring extra for the d5200,d5300,d5500 once you can get it on a good deal.
Ultimately if i were in your position and know now back then i would buy a used but good condition body either locally or from online and invest in a couple good lenses and start there.
But based on what i have just seen on amazon the t5 kit seems to be good value for money. Here is the link
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Cam ... s=canon+t5

Oh btw, i hope you arent thinking of bringing this through a skybox! That wont be a good idea.

guys, i'm an amateur and looking to purchase a camera for learning.

Photography for me is just a hobby and i'm mostly interested in places and wildlife.

I've been told that Nikon d90 is an excellent camera for learning photography and i'm intending to purchase a used one from Amazon.

To the poster above- i've never brought a camera through skybox as yet, are the charges high?

Looking for real life advice here guys.

Thanks.

The D90 is woefully out of date. Still my main body, but video sucks, and high iso noise is a killer, coupled with the crappy resolution. Go for the D7100 or better or D5500 if you are sold on nikon. If you are now starting, go with Canon and make your life easy (I have shot both canon and Nikon and would switch to Canon if I got the chance.). Image quality will not be very different, but lots of available used lenses and bodies locally. Buy used as DSLR's have a very long lifespan if treated well. Pricesmart had some nice T4i bundles recently.. you miss out on that.

Just to get this out of the way, Nikon has no professional crop sensor camera which is what I need (The D300 replacement). Nothing to beat the 7D or the new 7DMK2. Other than that:

Better selection of lenses, especially in the 70-200mm full frame range, better telephoto selections (Though Nikon is catching up), some great primes (their f1.8 and f/1.4 50's can't touch nikon's though), can adapt most other camera lenses to canon as it has a physically bigger mount. Better user interface and recall modes, Better customer service (Nikon has become unfriendly to service requests), currently the megapixel king (but we know that is only for a short time). Nikon has the disadvantage that not many of the new bodies can focus and change aperture during video without the power aperture control needed to drive the non-"E" type lenses.... I can go on and on about it, but Nikon's only edge on Canon right now is Flash exposure accuracy (Which is ironic in the sense that it is the major reason I am sticking with them), better low light performance and the glass of their lense itself (features not included). All in all, if I had to start over, which I intend to do sometime in the future when Photography actually pays me more than my day job, I will go with a canon professional full frame system and a sony compact system for video. Well, that is my intention for now until I see what nikon has up it's sleeve in a few years time.

With the exception of extreme sports photography as dictated by the buffer, most shooters who've handled the 7100 prefer it over the 300s.

Nowhere in the class of the 7DMK2 tho, both in ruggedness and in performance.

Ruggedness doesn't get me better pics though, lol. The 7D may feel more solid/heavy but who has broken a D7100/D7200 with regular or even abuse?

D7200 AF and IQ is better, 7D has a higher fps.

That 7D MKII rapid shutter sound though, orgasmic.

Got a chance to get my hands on Mirror's (the newspaper) 7DMK2 for a min and it was like holding a small singer sewing machine. Just a precision well oiled machine. You will be amazed the places you will find yourself when you have a rugged camera in your hands that you know can take whatever you throw at it.

trini mk5, nah definitely not bringing through skybox. was actually looking at that same bundle.

I guess i will have to look at the comparisons I am seeing online. Nikon seems to have a lot more features packed into it though.

also noting RB's comments on the two brands. thanks
