The Official CCTV Thread

Postby sonygoup » May 24th, 2014, 7:24 am

Saw that we really needed one of these, as wtk keep coming up ever so often....
Purpose of the thread mainly is for education about cctv system!

As so I'd update this post periodically with information along with Frequent Q&A that tuners ask.

Basic Terms;
CCTV-Closed Circuit Television is the use of video cameras for recording that transmits a signal to a specific place or set of monitors.
CMOS-Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor capture the charges produced by light. Line by line the charges are transported through the sensor to an output node where they are converted to an analogue signal.
CCD-Charge-Coupled Device also collect photogenerated charge. Each single pixel has an integrated complementary transistor circuit which amplifies the signal and assigns a digital value.

TVL-also know as tv lines, its a specification of an analog camera's or monitors's horizontal resolution power. So the higher the amount of tvl the better the quality of the camera.

IR Cut Lens-or heat-absorbing filters, are designed to reflect or block mid-infrared wavelengths while passing visible light.

DVR Digital video recorder which is use to record and store all the information being recorded by the cameras

Types of CCTV System & Cameras Formfactors

Analog -being the system that uses two wires BNC and power.

IP Systems Usually systems that use a CAT5(lan cable) and power supply .

Network utilizes just a power supply and a closed network connection but can be limited by its range to the DVR.

Camera Formfactors
Dome Camera-

Covert Camera (aka hiden camera comes in many form factors)

Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) Camera- Normally used for commercial applications where the camera can adjuste the manual pan, tilt or zoom on a fixed area.

Sonygroup?? You should adjust your post CMOS is a newer technology because its digital whereas CCD is analog. CCD more expensive because of it manufacturing & production process hence CMOS is the cheaper solution.

CMOS-Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor older type of cctv system but very cheap and popularly used.
CCD-Charge-Coupled Device slowing becoming modern pricing is medium to high while quality can be from 720p upwards

I have 2 TV tuner cards that can record a video input

Can I build a small PC and use this with some cameras to use as security cameras?

Hmm thinking about it maybe if the card has bnc inputs (like 4 in one card)that you could record yes!
Would just need alot of storage and power supply for the cameras
Remote viewing via team viewer
Only downfall I seeing so far is pc have to be on 24/7 to record other than that I'd say its a good idea

Also it have cctv cards too

I have overcome that obstacle. My mobile viewing connects in 1 second with good 4g. Low reception and it takes up to just 6 seconds. Streaming is smooth. Replay on phone flows like live tv

lmao @ loco

Thanks sony....

interested in knowing what cams your guys using....i just installed a zmodo 8 channel with 4 700TVL CMOS cams / 960H DVR. Daylight is extrmely clean and clear with D1 (960) resolution but night is poor in pitch black ...the infared is more like a "spot"....i want something higher quality for the "At risk" areas.

Any recommendations? been looking at some on amazon bet -100-150 us (per cam)

Ice you can always install lights with motion sensors in the areas you are worried about. Most times it the cheapest/most effective fix, just make sure the lights do not shine towards the camera.

same thing i was going to say. simple and cheap. plus anyone in your yard will react to a sudden burst of light. by that time the cam would have already recorded their motion.

or you can simply add an infrared unit

Yea i was thinking that , but i still want atleast two higher resolution day/night cams.

The ones that came with the system are ok , but i want to spend a little more on two with great detail / face recog / license recog from 50 feet (current ones show plate maybe 25 feet away)

Considering these :

2. http://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-CM-S38901SV ... al_qh_dp_t

If you want detail, go with a NVR that has POE and can do 1080P on PLAYBACK not only on live monitoring and some Megapixel IP cameras. I used cameras claiming up to 1000tvl and they were a waste compared to digital. RHD technologies has pretty good prices on his ip cams and nvrs, plus it should be a breeze for you to configure lol.

Hello Guys,
I don't mean to intrude on your discussion but here is a little bit of advice.

1080P is equivalent to 2 Megapixels, if you are going with IP camera please get cameras with POE (af compliant) built in. Additionally pay attention to your NVR playback as 33Hz was saying, but make sure all channels record in 1080P/2MP and also playback all channels in 1080P/2MP.
Some NVR's may only record 1 channel in 1080P/2MP and the rest in a lower resolution (1MP,960H,D1,CIF) and may only playback 1/2/4 channels at the same time.
With a lower resolution it really defeats the purpose of having an IP camera and also the digital zoom is really bad.

Thanks
