Which residential water pump to buy?

Postby airuma » February 13th, 2013, 3:40 pm

I need to purchase a water pump but the USA Goulds (JS*) price too high for my likeness. I'm leaning towards pentax or mexican goulds. I have a pressure tank from a goulds, will it work with a pentax? I'm looking for technical reasons to purchase one over the other.

although it's expensive, the Goulds have their rep. More than 40 years one going in my grandfather's house and it just needed maintenance every couple years or so whenever something went wrong like rusty electrical contacts or a new capacitor or just general cleaning. They're also very popular so servicing them is never a problem ito parts and stuff.

not saying other pumps not good, but u really want these things to last>20 years when u put it down in your house. Think of it as an investment. Having a pump for just 1 year problem free is not really a test.

Pressure tank should work with any pump.

Pentax is cheaper and easier to get replacement parts for vs the Gould.

Both will last years upon years without issue. It's the small things like the pressure switch or smart head that go bad and that's not really part of the pump itself.

I avoid smart heads like the plague as they turn the pump on for EVERYTHING.

Try to get the Goulds pump...I change about 25 pumps a year at my facility. The goulds hold out much longer. They are less prone to failure of the motor winding due to overheating. The impeller is stronger and the bearings hold out longer as well.If you live in a flood prone area, the goulds can submerge and return to normal operation with a minor service.

The pentax is a little cheaper, some of the impellers are plastic. The smart head will fail with fluctuations in voltage. For the bigger pentax pumps you can get the entire stator assembly to buy if needed... Pentax makes good bigger pumps (2HP and up) those cost more than the goulds 1/2HP anyway.

Parts for both pumps are available, pressure tank should be interchangeable with adapters for the fittings. The Mexican goulds hold out very well...

Ok. Got a pentax going on 14 years with an on/off switch. Smart head didn't last long. Recently bought another one that is going strong as well. There are many suppliers on the market, however, I got my 3/4 hp at A. Moses and Sons. 623-4482.

Goulds J5S or JRS5 is a good choice for homeowners with small to moderate sized homes.
Available at all Goulds / Xylem dealers e.g. Peake's etc.

What horsepower ratings do you guys have or what rating motor would you recommend? My parents have a 1/3hp Goulds and I find that slightly on the low end for flow. (Their pump is 20+ years and still going strong btw..)

Aeromotor is a good brand. Depends also on if you in a hard water or soft water area. Hard water is much harder on water pumps.

Also make sure and invest in a pump cover

Those smart head pumps are a waste off time.Goulds are the best just place a check valve on the lines.

goulds goin 31 years now
changed the pressure tank and the pressure switch every now and then
btw a 220v install is a little more efficient than a 110v

and what wrong with the mexican goulds? They work doubly hard, does the work that the privileged American goulds won't do, contributes positively to your household, maintenance? it's cheap just buy a new one when one doesn't show up to work because he had to go his cousin ramon's birthday party.

I heard that about Seiko watches too!!! Thanks for all the responses. I was told Modern Electrical have Mexican goulds at a good price too but they were closed ash Wednesday and I didn't get time to call today. What's the difference with the Mexican vs USA goulds other than the price? Also 14 years with a Pentax is not bad at all. Seems like choosing goulds is equivalent to super blue winning soca monarch and road march with his one and only song this year. How appropriate for people to be jumping up on Monday and Tuesday to someone singing " Friday mash up the place"

1 1/4" inlet and 1" outlet piping as far as reasonably possible.... on vertical piping u can break down to 3/4" or 1/2".

but get as big as a pressure tank as possible and u will exceed the 20 plus yrs service of these gould pumps.

im using a USA 1 HP goulds and a 22 gal xtrol pressure tank to service 4 bathrooms, 4 kitchens, 4 toilets.
i do not get any significant drop in water pressure wen alot of faucets are in use.

only two regrets i have; not able to put a bigger pressure tank... (space constrictions) and not running 1" discharge piping on all horizontal pipework. my 1" discharge only reached a little way after the pressure tank.

do a little research and read up how to properly install and set up ur pressure tank in particular setting the correct air pressures. if memory serves me correct the air pressure in a full pressure tank (with water) should be 2 psi lower than ur cut in pressure........ or sumting so........

but once set up properly.... u wud be good to go... and no constant on/off clicking of ur pressure switch. 5 million times per min.

drastically saves on the life of ur motor and electrical components.

EDIT: 220volts wiring helps lower tntec bill
