idle problem after replacing battery 2008 corolla

Postby brandon005 » November 8th, 2012, 6:38 pm

Good day tuners.
My battery went dead yesterday morning , my dad jump started the car without my knowledge and then went on to use the car. He then went and purchased a new battery same 560 cranking amps and replaced it. The problem is that the car is operating horribly at low speeds and low idle. When idling in traffic it normally sits at 600-800RPM now it's a miracle if it does... when at dead stops there is no kick down and RPM struggles to cross 1500RPM .today it dipped drastically while idling (under 500) and a low oil pressure warning came up and the car shut down. Restarted normal and drove. Took the car to run a diagnostic and the guy said no warning code came up and that the car just needs time to readjust since the ECU has been reset. So he just minutely raised the RPM so the car wouldn't shut down

Now I just asking for some advice on the matter since first time this happened. But if what he saying is true then the ECU is expecting the car to be running at optimum level for its default settings? However car has done over 100k and I'm sure it needs a good cleaning. Any tuners with knowledge please help this "newby" out.

...update: so after a few days I thought it was doing better ...
then I changed oil/oilfilter/air filter/the belt/plugs/cleaned throttle body... car started well and was working alright .. thought the ecu still just needed time.. this was saturday ...

on wednesday the problem was back to square one .. my neighbour did a diagnosis with the tool and it read that the coil packs were showin up error message .. they checkd it out ... coilpacks were actually good. . .told me to disconnect battery for ther night and restrt today and idle the car for a lil while on about 3000rpm ..

guess what.. that didn help much either.. the car is idling in drive at around 600-800 no stalling ..only on acceleration it stalls at 1400rpm then shoots up over 2000rpm.. once rolling it drive fine..in reverse it stalls at 200rpm and then cuts off .. just on initial acceleration from a stand still its horrible .. my father is probably to blame in all this.. the madman jump started the car from terminal to terminal.. the ground was not connected to the car..

do you guys think I may need a new brain or after the ecu reset by disconnecting the battery it should be fine ? after a few start ups... bear in mind .. i have gotten no engine check light message...

The problems being encountered after a battery change are not that unusual except for the lenght of time the vehicle is taking to settle learning and self reset issues.
What I suggest you do is try a battery with higher cranking amps if possible and take vehicle for a run and observe what happens.
The reason why I am making this suggestion has to do with the fact that many lower quality batteries don't really deliver the amps. as stated on the tag and in some cases have been on the shelf for past the approved time frame.
Many installers actually put new batteries on a top-up control charge before installation.
Importantly you havn't activated a check light and more than likely if you do a scan you might only pick-up stuff in memory which took place when the previous battery failed or was failing.
Finally, you may also consider doing a top-up charge on the new battery and re-install.

You asking me a good question ..my neighbour has a diagnostic machine and is also a mechanic.. can't really explain but from what I observed they listened .. switched them around & tried a replacement . .same effect .. the car came with a panasonic battery and i changed it to a powermaster 560 cranking amps(tested the battery today and it was charging properly)...
taking the car to a guy called Regis/Cyrus (if that's his correct name) in Enterprise Street .. he is supposed to be a Toyota specialist and has a pretty decent garage .. after telling him the situation he said its probably just an issue with the throttle causing the car to hold back and idle incorrectly and not necessarily the brain.. wish me luck guys.. will keep the updates coming

hows the engine idling in park?

had a similar experience when the plugs went bad, then the coil packs one month later and just recently 1 coil pack again less than 1 year after all that.

in the early stages before the engine light came on, the engine would drive and idle normally, and every now and then it would make a strange noise or hesitate to accelerate when i pressed the gas. the delay in acceleration became more prominent as it took more time for kickdown, till eventually one morning there was no kickdown at all.... car struggled to reach 80 km/h and then the engine light came on.

similar situation recently too.. the engine light didn't come on until there was blantant misfiring, bucking and serious vibrating of the car at low rpms. one coil pack had to be replaced.

SOLUTION: Bank 1 Oxygen Sensor 1 .. the guy said the dianostic would'nt pick it up since the car was still able to drive ... However it was in fact the problem since all other checks came up clean... $2000.00 solution. . . Hope this helps someone out in the future.

He said he checked voltage readings on the sensors because its not the first time he encountered problems along this line as the car had done quite a bit of mileage i.e. over the 100k km

that is cool, I used to read some porsche forums for older models
and the guys there did not need any fancy computer to fix their cars
they knew which sensors to check and what to look for.
