Nissan Taxi of choice for NY

Postby Coppershot » May 3rd, 2011, 7:39 pm

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Japan's Nissan Motor Co Ltd. has won New York's 10-year contract to build the next generation of taxis for the city, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Tuesday.

Turkish manufacturer Karsan Otomotiv and U.S. automaker Ford Motor Co were the other two finalists in bids for the contract.

Nissan's winning design in "The Taxi of Tomorrow" competition was a van based on its NV200 minivan, Bloomberg said.

"It's going to be the safest, most comfortable, and most convenient cab the City has ever had," Bloomberg said.

"We started this process to leverage our taxi industry's purchasing power to get the highest quality taxi ... the new taxis will be custom designed to meet the specific demands of carrying 600,000 passengers a day," he said.

Bloomberg said he has not ridden in the new taxi because it has not yet been built.

Nissan will be able to convert the NV200 to run on electric-only engines beginning in 2017. The city will test the use of electric engines in taxis using six electric Nissan Leafs, provided free to the city as part of the deal.

The NV200 is the first cab to pass federal crash testing with the taxi partition and taxi equipment installed.

The new taxi will replace 16 models, built by nine manufacturers, now on the city's streets.

New York City has 13,237 licensed taxis. The contract is expected to begin in 2013, when the city will begin phasing out the older models. It will take three to five years to replace them.

The NV200 taxi model will also include a transparent, panoramic roof panel. Karsan's van had gained notice because of its transparent roof for better sight-seeing and a ramp for wheelchairs.

The Turkish manufacturer had hoped to gain favor with city officials by promising to assemble the cars in Brooklyn with union labor. The plant would have marked a return of auto-making to the city for first time in about a century.

Bloomberg said that Karsan had not been selected largely because the company had little experience providing cars to the American market.

The Nissan NV200 taxis will be built at a Nissan facility in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and will be converted into taxis at an undetermined location in the New York area, Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares told reporters.

Nissan NV200 was presented at 2007 Tokyo Motor Show and looks like a large storage unit and was designed to be used on any commercial or personal need.

ent in america only one person to a taxi, unless the person who reach first agrees to share the taxi with the other person?? If so, why they need a taxi so big? Some cubes or scion xb woulda work fine, just put 4AA batteries in them and it electric. :|

Its unlikely that its the most reliable car for taxi. The biggest reason could very well be the same reason people like to wuk taxi with nissan in Trinidad.

Parts cheap and car not complicated to fix.

haha...........the successor to E25 for the Americas

The Nissan E25 Produced from April 2001 to present.
For Mexico (the only North American country with full-size Nissan vans), 2010 will be the last year for this generation, as the new American-built Nissan NV concept will replace it. It is yet unknown if the Mexican version will continue the Urvan name or use the NV name as in the United States and Canada. The E25 received a one-star rating on the Australian ANCAP crash test.

The Nissan NV (Nissan Van) is the first full-size van built by a Japanese automaker for the United States and Canada, and sold by Nissan. Until the introduction of the Nissan NV, Mexico was the only country in North America selling a full-size Nissan Van

It is not to be confused with the replacement for the E25 for the rest of the world.

Nissan NV200 (Japan/Europe) Hmmmm...........wheel Chair friendly.

What wrong with Nissan and them (only a mother could love) looking vehicles??!!
I have compared them with other models and so far... in my opinion... their exterior designers
watch way too much horror and cartoon TV.
I would love to see their point of reference in some of their planning stages.
I mean OH GOSH MAN!!!!
