The attitude of this man's wife was so repugnant, it sickened me! So he "merely" went to kill and rob the poor unarmed security guard :? So the fact that he didn't(allegedly) try to shoot it out with the Police, was ok? :?

Police kill two gunmen in St James robbery
By Joel Julien joel.julien@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jan 2, 2011 at 10:46 PM ECT
Story Updated: Jan 2, 2011 at 10:46 PM ECT
POLICE yesterday fatally shot two bandits, hours after four murders were recorded on the first day of the new year.
Around 2 p.m. yesterday, officers of the Western Division Task Force received a report of a robbery in progress at Tony's Food Mart at Dundonald Hill, St James.
When the officers arrived at the scene, two gunmen ran out of the supermarket. The gunmen shot at the officers and ran in different directions. The police returned fire.
One of the bandits was shot behind the supermarket.
The other bandit tried to escape and was shot along Belle Vue Terrace, three houses away from the supermarket.
Both bandits were placed in the back of the police van and were rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital. They were pronounced dead on arrival. Both remained unidentified up to last night.
Head of the Western Division Senior Superintendent Derrick Trim, yesterday described the officers as heroes who thwarted a robbery.
"If not for the quick response of the officers, the supermarket could have been robbed and the employees inside could have been killed," Trim said at the crime scene.
"We are not advocating killing, but the officers did what they had to do to manage the situation," he said.
Trim could not confirm how many firearms were retrieved from the dead bandits.
In his New Year's Day address to the nation, National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy vowed to win the war against rising crime.
"Fellow citizens, as we stand on the threshold of a new year, I give you my firm and sincere commitment that the Ministry of National Security and your Government will win this war on crime and that we will leave no stone unturned in this thrust," Sandy stated.
"I remain convinced that as we mobilise our communities and with the help of every law-abiding citizen, with the unwavering commitment of the Ministry of National Security and all its divisions, we can win this war against crime and restore Trinidad and Tobago to its place of pride among our Caribbean nations and indeed the international community."
Attempts to contact the owner of Tony's Food Mart, Anthony Fraser, proved futile yesterday.
Residents claimed the supermarket has always been a target for bandits.

Cop denies 'mongoose gang' talk
By Akile Simon

Crime fighters: Head of the North Eastern Division Task Force Sgt Roger Alexander, left, and members of his team, leave a house at Andrews Drive, off Quarry Street, Champs Fleurs, after the officers shot and killed two masked bandits who had held a family hostage during a robbery attempt on December 1, last year.

Story Updated: Jan 1, 2011 at 11:45 PM ECT

HEAD of the North Eastern Division Task Force Sgt Roger Alexander yesterday dismissed claims of a "mongoose gang" operating within his unit.

Alexander said every shooting incident involving his officers and armed criminal suspects was above board and that his officers have not used unnecessary force in any of the incidents, particularly when the armed criminals have been killed.

Alexander was responding to criticisms that his team was a "hit-squad" and that his officers use excessive force in several fatal shooting incidents.

"I can't just stay silent and allow people to sully the good names and character of my officers. We have been working very hard to ensure law and order is maintained across the country.

"It is not an easy job when we go out in the streets and are confronted by armed suspects who decide to shoot their way out. We have realised that the mentality of most of these suspects is to kill or be killed," Alexander said.

"We will not allow ourselves to be daunted by allegations that we are a hit squad, mongoose gang and these sorts of things. We have a job to do and we will continue to do it and be professional at all times.

"We want the public to give us their fullest support for the coming year and rest assured, they will have ours whether it be on the operational side or mediation side," Alexander said.

On December 1, last year, Alexander and his officers were praised when they stormed a house in Mendez Drive, Champs Fleurs, and shot dead Kyle "Ravi" John, 18, and Kaled "Scoop" Antoine, 25, who had held a family hostage during an armed robbery.

Three weeks ago, Alexander and his officers were again in the spotlight after he shot and killed one of two armed suspects, minutes after the men had staged an armed robbery at the Mt Hope branch of American Stores.

Last Friday, Alexander was one of several officers honoured by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Social and Welfare Association during an appreciation ceremony at Cascadia hotel, St Ann's.

Head of the Trinidad and Tobago Crime Watch, Ian Alleyne has also called on Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs to publicly recognise and honour Alexander and his team for their contribution to the fight against crime in the past year.

Alleyne said Crime Watch works closely with Alexander and that "he is someone who has gone beyond the call of duty and he seemed to have no day off at all".

He said Crime Watch has taken a decision to nominate Alexander as "cop of the year" and his unit the most outstanding unit of the year.

A police constable on Wednesday night shot and wounded a 50-year-old La Brea man during a confrontation along the Southern Main Road in Rousillac.

According to a police report, around 9.45 p.m. on Wednesday, the officer was driving an unmarked police vehicle west along the Southern Main Road, near Yetto's Roti Shop, when a convoy of vehicles overtook his vehicle. One of the vehicles struck the unmarked vehicle causing the officer to pursue the car.

After the "getaway" driver brought the vehicle to a standstill, the officer approached and identified himself as a police officer and one of the occupants of the vehicle pointed a firearm at him.

The officer drew his pistol and fired ten shots at the suspect following which the vehicle sped off. A report was made to the police and a contingent of officers from the South-Western Division went in search of the vehicle and the suspects.

Officers later went to Boodoosingh Street, La Brea, where the man from Thomas Street, Arouca, was found with gunshot injuries to his left arm and lower abdomen.

The man was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated and warded under police guard.

A 17-year-old Diego Martin teenager, who police yesterday described as a menace, was shot in the chest by police, after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers who were on mobile patrol at Four Roads.

The suspect, police said, was up to late yesterday warded under police guard in a satisfactory condition at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Officers said the suspect was wanted in connection with a series of robberies within the Four Roads area, including an incident in which he beat a vegetable mart proprietor with a gun until the victim became unconscious during a recent robbery.

According to police, around 2.45 p.m. yesterday officers from the Four Roads Anti Crime Patrol Unit were on mobile patrol along upper Union Road, Four Roads, when they saw the suspect and another man at the side of the roadway, looking at a firearm.

Officers said when they challenged the men, the suspect pointed the gun in the direction of the officers and one of the officers shot the victim once in the chest.

Both suspects ran off into nearby bushes and a search was conducted in the area. Fifteen minutes later, the injured suspect was discovered hiding near a river. He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, treated and warded.

Doctors told police that the projectile struck the suspect's lung but he will survive the injury.

A team of officers led by Insp Henry Dan of the Western Division visited the scene and are investigating. (AS)

AN 18-year-old Laventille man remains warded in stable condition at the Port of Spain General Hospital after he was shot in the chest during an alleged confrontation with officers assigned to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Friday night.

The suspect, police said, hailed from Belgrade Street, Laventille Road. Up to late yesterday he remained warded under police guard at hospital.

According to police, around 10.30 p.m. soldiers and police officers assigned to the IATF had responded to a report that a group of men were seen brandishing firearms at Bath Street, East Dry River, Port of Spain.

Officers said when they arrived, they spotted a suspect who fitted the description of the men and a chase ensued. The suspect was confronted along Revilliac Street, where he fired shots at the police who returned fire.

The suspect was shot in the chest and right foot. Police said they seized a firearm and seven live rounds of ammunition from the suspect, who was later taken to hospital.

Supt Lennard Gay of the Port of Spain CID was among several officers, including Crime Scene Investigators, who visited the scene. Gay is continuing investigations into the incident.

This latest police shooting comes on the heels of an incident on Friday afternoon in which officers from the Four Roads Police Station shot and wounded a 17-year-old they described as a menace, during an incident at Upper Union Road, Four Roads.

The suspect, police said, was wanted in connection with a series of robberies within the Four Roads area, including an incident in which he beat a vegetable mart proprietor with a gun until the victim became unconscious during a recent robbery.

He also remains warded under police guard at hospital.

A man described by police as a "notorious pest" who was wanted in connection with multiple murders, shootings, kidnappings, robberies and escaping legal custody, was on Saturday night shot dead during a confrontation with police in Tunapuna.

Jason Bhagwandeen, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, after he was taken to the facility by police shortly after 9 p.m.

Officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, the North-Eastern and Northern Division Task Force led by Sgt Roger Alexander and Cpl Matthew Harewood, acting on information, stormed the yard of a house at Back Street, Tunapuna, where they shot and killed the suspect.

Acting on information, police said they surrounded the house.

As officers attempted to enter the yard, Bhagwandeen ran out with a T-shirt covering his face. Upon seeing the officers, he reportedly fired two shots at them and ran to the back of the house where he jumped over a wall and was confronted by other police officers.

Police claimed the suspect pointed a revolver in their direction and they opened fire on him, hitting him in the chest.

A search was conducted inside the house and officers detained a 35-year-old woman on charges of harbouring a wanted fugitive and several other offences.

Police said Bhagwandeen escaped legal custody while at the Arima Magistrates' Court last year on a charge of kidnapping businessman Wazir Mohammed who was rescued in a forest at Sangre Grande.

Police said they have been searching for Bhagwandeen for several months.

Officers said after they got information that he was staying in the Tunapuna area, they had several residences under surveillance.

Investigations are continuing into the incident.

On March 14, 2008, officers of the Eastern Division and Northern Division Task Force, shot and killed one of Bhagwandeen's brothers, Marlon, during a shootout when police stormed a shack where he was hiding out at in Oropouche Road, Valencia.

Police said he was wanted in connection with three murders, several rapes, shootings and other serious crimes in the Las Lomas, Caparo and Longdenville area.

A third sibling, Ezra, 26, police said, remained incarcerated on charges of murdering four men who were playing a game of dominoes outside a parlour at Kernaham Trace, Chin Chin Road, Cunupia on August 18, 2006.

Christopher Nelson, 48; Gerard Gibson, 53; Reynold Elie, 53 and Willard Cantaro, 31, were playing dominoes on a wooden bench outside a roadside shop, when two masked men walked up to them and opened fire.

In 2007, Waldron Samuel, 24, one of the State's main witness who was due to testify against Ezra in the murder case, was gunned down while liming at a bar at Madras Road Junction, Chin Chin, Cunupia.

Bhagwandeen's picture was on the Ministry of National Security's 'face-to-face' most wanted advertisements.

His picture also appears on the Caribbean's Most Wanted website.
