Help!!! Ford Ranger not Starting

Postby rum-like-water » September 20th, 2012, 6:34 pm

2004 ford ranger 2.5td.

Van started no problems, started to idle rough then cut off after approx two minutes.
Never started again, tumbling strong.
Checked fuel filter is okay, primed the filter by hand, holding pressure. checked the fuel cut solenoid, have the 12v when ignition is on. I hear the solenoid activating.

Is it possible for fuel pump to fail instantaneously. Any other checks that could be made.
when tumbling the van, no smoke from exhaust, I think no fuel. Is there any other fuel cut off.

BTW mechanical pump. And any recommended garages to get problem sorted out, if can't get it started needs to be wrecked.

Thanks for suggestions

Anyone knows what pressure I am supposed to get there.

make sure the glow plugs getting current ...

if it is then try a ghetto method i use.. get a can of bop and spray into the filter.. now trick is not to overspray but just short bursts .. if the van attempts to start then u have a fuel problem .. check and bleed from fuel pump to injector..trick to see if fuel pump is working is to brak an injector line an deisel will spurt out .. if not then get some help

Op get a bottle of fuel and place the intake hose into the bottle, start pumping the hand pump untill it gets hard, then crack all the injector lines a little, let some one tumble look to see if fuel spurting out of the lines,it will spurt out one by one,as each line gets more fuel it will spurt out a lot just tighten them one by one if it does not start mix some oil with a LITTLE bit of gas and put a few drops in the intake and tumble. If there is no smoke coming out is either no fuel or injector pump gone.

Any updates on this topic ? I think Im having the same issue . Bypassed the hand pump and filter , van starts and works perfect , put it back original , issue started again , changed the hand pump , problem persisted . Any info on this ?

Sounding like the filter is becoming clogged/restricted when put into operation. When last you drop the tank and cleaned it? Not a good idea to bypass because you will eventually damage the pump if sediments are passing.

Also when you changed the hand pump and filter and primed up the filter, leaving the out line disconnected to the injector pump. How is the flow rate?

Please note that those replacement primer pumps are sheit and shouldnt be used, get a used Unit or a brand new one, the navara new ones sell for just over 1k with a filter if i can recall.

keep the filter in the injector pump also, its good to take it out and clean ever so often. Another thing i do is install a metal gas filter after the primer pump also, keep that there and change every 3-4 diesel filter change, diesel filter change is good to be done at every oil change but try to do every 10k at least.
