Two major earthquakes have struck off the coast of New Zealand, one 5.0, another 7.5 and now a third possibly 8.0 being reported

7s is not nothing burger... there will be a few upper 6's in after quakes that may trigger tsunamis if in the right spots. also may change the orientation of the earth and u well get stress release as the energy transfers to other plate boundaries like the crack in a windscreen.

wait, didnt a few years ago they had a 8 that caused a big chunk of land to slip into the sea?

There's supposed to be something like 18 7.0s and greater in a year and one 8.0 in a year.
This is 2 7.0s in one day.

indonesia had some volcano activity over the last month too. its in the same region of influence, as in activity in one place, can influence activity in those other places. or, actually indicate upcoming activity.
speculation, but the patterns seems obvious.

Wow, I haven't logged on as myself in ages.

Anyhoo, I live in the southern part of North Island, and slept through the drama. Didn't feel a thing. Also there are people surfing on the beach outside my office right now. We didn't even get the obligatory "stay safe" email.

So no big I guess.
