https://www.autoweek.com/news/people/a3 ... yers-obit/Bruce Meyers—fine artist, surfer, designer, hot-rodder, Navy hero, off-road racer, and inventor of the dune buggy—has died. He was 94.
Meyers is best known to automotive enthusiasts as the designer of the Meyers Manx dune buggy. The compact, swoopy, instantly recognizable body, built from fiberglass and designed to drop onto a shortened Volkswagen Beetle floor pan, became the signature shape of the signature vehicle of Southern California, beloved by surfers, adventurers, and off-road racers alike.
Meyers built his very first dune buggy, "Old Red," for personal use on his many explorations of the Baja. But he soon realized there was market potential in the design, and began producing the Meyers Manx commercially. He kept Old Red for the rest of his life, estimating he racked up well over 100,000 desert miles in the rig.
A World War II Navy veteran, a lifelong surfer, and a bon vivant of the finest Southern California variety, Meyers' life defied short summation. For a full understanding of the man, his attitude, and his many accomplishments
