Losing coolant

Postby Chris00007 » February 15th, 2021, 10:41 am

I have a Y12 Wingroad and when the car idling (with AC on) for about an hour, I notice the coolant overfill bottle does lose about half the coolant it had in it.

If I driving normal conditions, I does almost never lose any coolant. So it only happens when I idling for a long time. That normal?

Loosing and systems puts it back or you need to top up?

The coolant in the overflow bottle goes up and down. Does not mean that it is lost.... It varies with temperature.

question - does the max level refer to where it should be when hot or cold?

When the engine is cold, the level should be between min and max.

When the engine is hot, the level can rise above the max line.

make sure the coolant bottle hose properly fits, if it isnt snug, then coolant can be lost when its getting transferred

also while you at it, change the radiator cap with a new OEM one

Loosing mean a leak either internally or externally.
Of course it will loose over time but rapid amounts is a leak.

But it weird that I could literally drive normal for months and not lose a drop. But if I park up with the car on idle for about an hour, half of the overfill bottle goes down and doesn't even come back when the engine is cold

Is it filled above max mark on the coolant reservoir bottle.

I does check when the engine cold. Normally it's always by Max or very close to Max (after normal driving conditions) but if I park up and it idle for more than an hour, next time I check when the engine cold it'll be about halfway to the max line on the bottle

(unrelated) why you idling for an hour parked?
Excessive idling isn't all that great for any car

If the overflow not empty and radiator staying full, leave it so.
Else I'd say its something to do with your head gasket or water pump.

Has the engine ever overheated?

Well the y12 don't have a temp gauge, but instead a light that does come on if its overheating. The light doesn't come on so I guess it doesn't overheat

Normally I wouldnt add my bit to technical discussions but this kinda coolant $h!7 happened with me already more than a couple times ... coolant was disappearing oil clean, no drops anywhere it was just mystic I was adding a lill here and there every month.

It wasnt till i drove the car to work and checked it was idling after did i notice the finest of leaks coming from a hose.

Better you find that cause coolant dont put on he khaki pants and walk out your system so ... probably some ole hose getting ready to buss somewhere.

Relative of mine had a similar issue with a nissan hr15, would loose coolant, sometimes would see a drip in driveway, mechanic checked and couldn't find the issue

Radiator shop check and pressure test couldn't find any leaks

Mechanic concluded to change head and block, changed it and still loosing coolant

I looked it over for them and i found the heater core hose connection on the firewall leaking, inside and outside had coolant leaking

Bypass heater core, no more coolant loss

I'm not a mechanic btw, i just have a lil common sense, good luck with them mechanic out dey, get a second opinion

Normal driving you will be ok. When you idling long with ac and load the pressure and temp in cooling system is insane.
1 change radiator cap

2 install a proper temperature gauge. A slight overheat can cause head gasket failure and when expansion occurs with heat coolant burning out.
I overheat twice and coolant red light never came on.

3 pressure test system by good radiator man to find leak. I had same disappearing coolant . Mech change bypass hose. Same issue. I pressure test and heater hose was leaking by hose clip. I cut piece of bad hose and rejoin. For months I was good and now losing slight coolant again so time to replace hoses as temporary solution no longer holding out . Dont wait until hose buss and you in price plaza idling and wondering why ac stop blowing cold and you only smelling coolant.
