Angostura workers strike because no Christmas bonus this year

Postby abducted » December 22nd, 2020, 10:33 am

Angostura workers down tools

Workers at Angostura shutdown the company’s operations today, one senior union officer has told Guardian Media, saying close to 300 unionised employees have downed their tools.

According to the union representative, the workers are protesting a last-minute decision by the company not to pay bonuses this year.

The SWWTU (Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union) rep says the workers feel hurt by this decision, as there was no indication by the company of breaking what they call “tradition”.

The workers say they understand that 2020 was a difficult year for many but point out that they made sacrifices too—such as working overtime and changing shifts to help the company accomplish its pandemic goodwill.

The workers were hoping to meet with management today, and say they hope that good sense will prevail.

My question is if "management" got bonuses and the plebs got the shaft.

Yes but tell the staff of those intentions at at the beginning of the financial year not at the end. They did not do so as any company that removes incentive bonuses knows that productivity will fall significantly once u do that cause, the average worker would think that why should they work hard and try to excel in this target when they not going to get paid the extra moolah to do so?

Didn't Angostura pay full salaries during Covid even though they were on a 2 week roster system?

It's not like they could work at home since it's production line type stuff, so they were being paid a full salary for half the work.

Zoom,

If we were to fire and hire based on job performance, you would find that more Trinis will be fired.

So to answer your question, i would think it would be beneficial for Angostura to employ Venes in addition to hard working Trinis.

What about Nigerians?

Dear unemployed people, now is a good time to send your resume to Angostura. Tell them you willing to work with no end-of-year bonus expectation and that you agree to stay non unionized. Expect to be given an offer.

The problem with bonus payments have always been the lack of proper performance targets being set ( with periodic reviews) and getting buy-in with staff or their representative entity.
Bonuses in T&T have long become more like gratuitous payments which are really good-will payments prone to the out-look of the employer, and therein lies cause for confusion and discontentment.
Traditionally, at this time of the year employees are in a emotional mess and expectations are high, which yields really bad reactions to disappointment.

Not sure about that roster system applying to the production people. Heard some office admin staff were on that off n on rotation vibe and given laptops to wfh when rotated out. The issue I have with the situation is the silence on whether the management got incentives/bonuses. Then again...life eh fair

full pay could mean they got their hourly rate for the hours they put in, not necessarily the hours what they were accustomed working for... could.
workers stood up toghether for what they believed in, i like dat.
but it was sumting not owed, but a custom.
angustura played nice and agreed to give them sumting. and if they could share way sanitizer free, then they could more than bless up thier own.

company showed appreciation, once the workers reciprocate , every ting irie
