That orange smoke is indicative of the formation of nitrogen dioxide which occurs when ammonium/ sodium nitrate explodes in the presence of water

Yeah was studying that too, instant pressure wave. Even if you cork your ears the pressure will go thru ur mouth/nose and affect your cochlea directly anyhow

Probably watched that video a dozen times today. That blast wave is the single most impressive I've seen, ever. You have to feel it for all the people affected. Heard someone say somewhere that "there is no more glass in all of Beirut."

Beirut explosion: Port officials under house arrest as rescue efforts continue

A number of Beirut port officials are being placed under house arrest pending an investigation into Tuesday's huge explosion, Lebanon's government says.

The blast killed at least 135 people and injured more than 4,000 others. A two-week state of emergency has begun.

President Michel Aoun said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse.

Customs chief Badri Daher said his agency called for the chemical to be removed, but "this did not happen".

u noticed it had big smoke before the blast. so the welder probably did some crap, caught someting on fire, and that subsequent environment probably triggered the blast.

despite the tragedy, this is the closest thing that we will experience to a nuke setting off in a city with such clear recordings.

You're correct, however some ammonium nitrate comes in the form of ANFO or ammonium nitrate fuel oil, where it is infused with diesel or some such. The high temperature of the burning building will cause release and ignition of the hydrocarbon. Some forms of ANFO itself are more sensitive to pressure which is the method used in their initiation systems
