One of the more well-known businesses listed here that closed, I know the owners....they closed the one branch in the west and opened another one in the south. Big business has contracted while small to (some) medium have seen great growth (i'm lucky to have seen 60%-75% increase on my end, from the beginning of covid to now). As companies and gen public look at more family/"mom-and-pop" operations for better prices as opposed to big companies. There have been worse, things will be fine, the economy always bounces back.
Alot of these bussiness are nothing more than fronts for washing money.

^^

There is serious truth to this although it may sound farfetched to many .

But the fact that it is funneled into the financial system it has an economic benefit .

There are many examples but that "ole talk" should stay with the academics :D
People in this banana republic just dont want to admit the truth with these shady bussiness.

Hello RedVEVO,

yeh bro, place rel dead.

Most importantly be careful, do not wonder about in remote areas for safety purposes.

You can consider hiring Venezuelan bodyguards if needed. You won’t regret it.

As always, they are willing to work and they will protect you.

A mate of mine had a Trini bodyguard and they got into a situation....the Trini bodyguard was on his cell phone and reacted poorly, slowly and inefficiently as expected.

Be safe out there my good man.

The business owners of the so-called 1% are usually BIG investments - example Malls, Manufacturing, Distribution etc.

It is NOT a hustle like a hot dog cart or a Saturday car wash or peanuts :D

When Gov't tries to close down their business establishment for NO APPARENT reason , yes they shout and bawl out

COVID continues despite ALL the shut down . Nothing has worked . NOTHING !!

Why the shout and bawl ?

Because they have invested thousand , if not millions and employ people . They have loan commitments and family to maintain after securing hefty loans @ exorbitant interest rates .

Meanwhile the other 99% line up on pavement waiting to enter social services .

There is a difference when they shout and bawl out and work and employ people.

MovieTowne to leave Chaguanas for good

It’s official.  MovieTowne Chaguanas will be closed permanently, leaving only the Port-of-Spain and San Fernando branches.

The news broke this morning, via a brief statement issued by MovieTowne Owner, Derek Chin, who said after many weeks of intense negotiations with the landlord of Price Plaza Shopping Mall, both parties could not agree on a resolution.

Chin said as a result, MovieTowne decided to close down permanently and to remove its assets and presence from the mall.

The owner apologised to all the Central and Chaguanas patrons who supported his company for the last 10 years and added that they will look at alternative possibilities once the COVID-19 pandemic is no more.

Last week, Chin said he told the landlords of Price Plaza that he could no longer afford what was being charged and asked for an adjustment on the rent.

He was hoping for a positive outcome.

Chin reopened his other cinemas last Tuesday, after the green light was given by the Prime Minister, for operating at 50% capacity.

The full text of the statement follows…

STATEMENT BY MOVIETOWNE OWNER, DEREK CHIN.

After many weeks of intense negotiations with our landlord we have been unable to resolve our status at MT Chaguanas. As a result MT has made a final decision to close down permanently and to remove its assets and presence from Price Plaza Mall.

We wish to say sorry to all our Central and Chaguanas patrons who have supported us over the last 10 years but can assure you, we will be looking at alternative possibilities once the COVID virus issue is minimized.

Thank you again and please continue to support us at our other two branches at C3 Mall in South, and MovieTowne Mall in Port of Spain.

The way the economy is, MT Chaguanas will end up like Sunday Basket Arima branch: sit untouched for years until somebody eventually snaps it up for a completely unrelated venture. Derek Chin will at least take the signage down.

in these pnm hard times & covid times landlords shud ease up their rent rates a lil bit , better eat a lil bit than risk losing not eating at all

but supposing d landlord wants to get into d cinema business for himself or a rival company made him a better offer ...

Chin is a smart fella. They need him in that compound more than he needs them. I’m sure with the economic downturn he crunched the figures and realizes Sando, POS, Tobago and Guyana could keep him afloat even if he cut Chaguanas loose.

You didn't bother to read the article that you posted.

"The downtown branch at Excellent Stores, Port-of-Spain—its longest-standing branch—will close at the end of December 2020 as the company continues to revolutionise its business model.

In a statement, the company explained that with the increased demand for online and curbside orders, Excellent Stores is upgrading its e-commerce business by repurposing and reallocating a greater amount of resources into its processes to enhance the customer experience and fulfilment processes, as well as a variety of payment options to increase its usability to a wider segment of the population.

Although many businesses are folding due to the economic shock caused by COVID-19, Excellent Stores said this was not the case."
