So I'm thinking, in addition to mask fatigue, could it be this variant was spreading in the last few weeks which is why cases so high? And they only now detected it. They testing already low. The sequencing for variants even lower.

Bro, by now u should know Mondays always slow. Only ppl who paying dey $1400 at private labs getting tested over d weekend. And with this new variant things not gonna get any better.

We probably need a FULL but brief lockdown now. Not to merely reduce those cases of variants but to eradicate it.

They already have a hard time tracing cases with the ordinary covid, but a fast spreading variant? Lockdown like New Zealand- Go hard, go early approach is needed.

No lockdowns will still work, as they reduce the Rnaught (which is the basic reproduction number). So new cases become less over time.

Keeping the borders closed only makes sense (aside from a resource perspective) if your cases are very low. and you want to keep new source of infections out.

Right now closing the borders becomes and has been utterly pointless.

The risk of variants getting into the population from quarantined and tested visitors in a controlled border is super low.

The risk of variants getting in from a porous uncontrolled border with illegal immigrants from Venezuela is super high.

as for the official borders, if they have a 7 day state quarantine for someone who coming from the US (despite them having the B117 variant now dominant) , they can test +ve after that 7 days- and if they happen to break home quarantine and also have a variant, well it get's into the community.

and the unofficial borders? that's why i said an SOE might be needed now to lockdown those borders. cancel all leave in ttps and bring out the TTDF as well. with theses variants the health of the nation and economy is at stake more than ever.

the TTDF can help with mass vaccination too. We should be doing 5000 a day. even in the US which has vaccinated half their population with their 1st dose the variants are still a threat. imagine we boasting about 1200 a day- pretty soon there's gonna be more infections per day than shots per day.

A controlled border poses no risk, an open border to fleeing Venezuelans poses a huge risk of covid variants coming in. That's all.

And yes at this point keeping our borders closed in it's present form is serving no real purpose. Especially as many trinis who need to come back have been already vaccinated.

based on the latest data by the CDC, what they can possibly do is allow FULLY vaccinated nationals (taken both shots) with proof of that and -ve PCR test back home and quarantine at home for 14 days. with no state quarantine requirement then no exemption or waiting for room at a quarantine site. assuming foreigners are allowed to be vaccinated in the US.

the home quarantine is still important due to the variants affecting efficacy of vaccines. i think with astrazeneca it's like 70% with the P1 variant.

i guess vaccine passports will be necessary now. to come in and out.
