Gary says: No midnight countdown at bars, hotels, restaurants

THE police will be out in "full force" tonight to ensure that there is to be no congregating at bars, hotels and restaurants to usher in the New Year.

Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith has sounded the warning that his officers will be patrolling the country to enforce the Public Health Ordinance Regulations to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Griffith reminded the owners and operators of these establishments that these regulations state very clearly that these places must close at 10 p.m.

Griffith said, "Those places which are openly advertising their events for tonight, please be advised that the TTPS will be visiting you. I have noticed that in one case, a hotel has advertised to the public that persons can ring in the New Year at the waterfront. There is another case where a restaurant has advertised that patrons can have a quiet dinner before the countdown begins."

The CoP has advised that this is contrary to the Public Health Regulations and the owners and operators should desist.

He said the TTPS officers will be out in full force to ensure that persons in their exuberance, do not flout the regulations and cause the Covid-19 virus statistics to increase in the coming days.

Commissioner Griffith is reminding citizens that bars are to be closed at 10 p.m., and therefore, there should be no congregating outside these establishments to bring in the New Year.

He said that police patrols in all nine police divisions will be increased over the next three days to ensure that people adhere to the regulations.

'Town will burn!' Gary warns 'persons of interest'

A WARNING was issued to several well-known, “persons of interest,” on Friday night by Police Commissioner, Gary Griffith who had them detained following the circulation of threats on social media.

The message titled, “Town will burn to the ground,” claimed that gang members in and around Port of Spain preparing for, “all out war,” after a, “truce,” had broken down.

The message which carried the aliases of gang leaders claimed that some residents in Duncan Street, Nelson Street, Mango Rose and St Paul and Basilon Streets in east Port of Spain had moved out.

While the police said that, “there is no intelligence to verify these alleged threats,” they still prepared anyway.

In a statement carried on social media yesterday police said that: “Immediately upon receipt of this information, Ag DCP Joanne Archie held a coordinating meeting with various specialised and intelligence units, including Guard and Emergency Branch, Special Investigations Unit, SIU, the Inter Agency Task Force, Port of Spain CID, Highway Patrol Branch and the Port of Spain Division Task Force.”

Police said that after the meeting, “several persons of interest were brought into the Besson Street and St. Joseph Police Stations.”

Griffith later visited both stations, where he made it clear to them that the “police will not tolerate any plans among groups to cause any mayhem and destruction.”

Griffith said he received hundreds of messages from concerned members of the public about the veracity of the threats.

He said, “if the messages circulating had any truth, the TTPS will move swiftly to take down any attempts to escalate any gang-related criminal activity that brings inconvenience to the public.”

Griffith said that he reminded the “persons of interest” of the attempts made at the end of June 2020, which were met with immediate resistance by the police.

Yesterday saw a red Rav 4 like that on Dock Road exiting to Wrightson Road go down the right lane to get to the front of the lights (this is where there is already 2 lanes exiting so he was in Lane 3). Hit the side mirror of a parked car. The driver of the car drove off to meet the SUV and met him just by Hyatt's entrance. They had a convo but as soon as the lights turned green the SUV drove off and the driver of the car was left there looking rather vex. I can only assume they tell him HYMC or something.

Does TTPS get to leave the scene of an accident?
