Government will be holding a public consultation on a proposed project for an overpass in the Diego Martin area.

The Ministry of Works and Transport and NIDCO said the consultation will be held June 18, 2019 at the Four Roads Government Primary School from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for a proposed overpass linking the Diego Martin Valley and the Chaguaramas peninsula.

The Ministry said the proposed project entails:

- a four-lane overpass over the Diego Martin Highway (providing new access to the Powder Magazine compound)

- Connector road on the western side of the Diego Martin Highway (to provide access to the proposed Diego Martin Regional Corporation Administrative Complex and Westpark recreational facilities)

- An access ramp on the eastern side of the Diego Martin Highway, serving as the new main access to Powder Magazine Phase 2 and egress to both Powder Magazine Phase 2 and Victoria Keyes

- An access ramp from the western connector road to northbound Diego Martin Highway

- Pedestrian facilities and sidewalks

- Associated drainworks, inclusive of construction of new culverts and replacement of existing culverts.

The Ministry said the proposed project would also widen/re-lane the Western Main Road at the intersection of the Western Main Road and Columbus Boulevard.

The Ministry said the meeting is being conducted as part of the Social Impact Assessment of the proposed project.

Information would be shared on the process to be used by affected individuals, groups and communities to submit grievances to the MOWT and NIDCO and to seek redress when they believe an adverse impact has arisen from the proposed project activities.

Exactly... so they can say they "consulted" with the public if mess happens down the line.

What exactly can the public tell them on the science and engineering of road infrastructure and traffic? Won't they just hire consultants and experts in this field and tell them to draw up the plans? How is the public cyaking in a town hall helping with this specific issue?

This kind of town meeting is all but a dog and pony show.

Justification for their followers to buy in to their nonsense as usual. Wasting taxpayers dollars for infrastructure that’s not needed during a period of economic downturn. Then again....recession done

Actually, the public can contribute a significant amount. Engineering is 70% common sense, 30% science. The public should make the effort to attend these types of meetings and make a contribution to what their tax dollars are paying for.

You can't say gollywogs on tuner, use another word.

People on tuner are sensitive and get their feelings hurt .

which people? Because everyone has easy access to both currently, a different road network makes no difference to that, both areas have security checkpoints, I call BS on your post.

Re the overpass, I don't think it's necessary as daily traffic isn't that bad there except for when there are events, the removal of the lights at Columbus Circle is a plus but you will still have the bottle neck bet Goodwoood Park and Glencoe, I suppose it eases up Four Roads but again that bottleneck lower down. If this is part of some Western Peninsula masterplan I'd like to see all of it presented rater than this piecemeal overpass, as is access to the West Park can be done via a filter lane

well the plan is to widen the entire roadway into Chaguramas, but we all know thats not gonna happen as the only place to widen is to reclaim into bayshore owners backyards, TTYC boat yard, lindas bakery will have to lose its entire car park, glenco plaza will also have to lose all its frontage, thats damn near impossible.

The only way they're widening that road is by building the causeway.

Would have been an excellent project, far better than the highway to Toco

Thank you! I've had public consultations on some past projects and it's all about picking up and catering for issues that weren't previously considered. A long time resident of an area will always be able to tell even the best engineer things he doesn't know.

Engineering would allow you to design for forces and the environment. Public consultations allows you to design for the people that will ultimately use the end product (including how you plan to carry out the work)
