Major Fire in Point Fortin... now La Brea (Pitch Lake)

Postby The_Honourable » May 21st, 2019, 9:49 pm

At 2:10PM today the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS) responded to a fire which ignited on the compound of Earth Environmental Company Limited which is located in close proximity to the Guapo Landfill.

The Disaster Management Unit of the Point Fortin Borough Corporation was mobilized to render support to WASA and the TTFS. The water tender of the Point Fortin Borough Corporation is currently being utilized by the fire services to aid in the containment of the fire.

At this time, no residents have been affected. Ongoing attempts are being made to contain the fire and suppress any possible effects to the community.

Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government.

Thing like a volcano yes. And just as much pollution. I sure everything within 10km covered in soot and fine ash.

Was the fire deliberate, on account of an accident, negligence or just a bush fire gone horribly bad?

Any possible cause?

Standard practice, the resulting oil/water emulsion floats and forms a barrier.

It seems that Kaizen operates a chemical waste facility where volatile and toxic substances are dumped. That area seems to be poorly managed hence why a bush fire was able to ignite it.

Wait but isn't Kaizen a waste disposal and handling company, shouldn't they have been better able to avoid this situation?
