it depends. if you are asking if oversized rims and tyres do damage to your car the answer is yes.

he wants to lift the FWD SX4...

OP if it isn't to manufacturer specification, then yes there will be wear and tear on transmission and drivetrain components...
as you want to lift, I assume larger tyres, which in itself are heavier than spec

You should NOT go larger than 2 inches in rim size past manufacturer specs. If you car comes with 14inch rims, 16 should be the largest you go. You need to remember than your suspension parts were engineered to carry a certain weight of rim and it's one of the main reason's why people in Trinidad are always in the bamboo buying suspension parts. That along with the poor quality of our roads should be considered when thinking about buying large rims. Vans and pickups may be the only exception to this.

Just sharing my experience. I own a 3.2 Sportero with 250,000kms at the time I decided to lift the van and throw on some 20" rims with 305 55 20 Nittos which were bigger and MUCH heavier than anything I ran before, including 305 70 16 on the original rims.
I immediately lost power on acceleration and decreased braking capacity. 6 weeks later after "normal" driving (right foot to the floor the majority of the time) an output planetary carrier sheared in two and all indicators pointed to the wheels.
So imo yes they do but I've learned and now I take my time when accelerating to avoid putting too much stress on the trans again.
Hoping to get a lighter set soon

A bigger wheel with the same weight and offset would not adversely affect your suspension......but i am guessing you want the wheel/tyre extended out a bit to get " the look".

Besides the issue of weight... The taller gearing will put additional strain on your driveway components
