Excellent. Next step is to ban plastic drinking straws. We're finally getting somewhere!

Ban mercury bulbs too

It's as outdated as CRT tv's/monitors, and LED's are much more efficient and simpler to power.
and well............ mercury does kinda be harmful too nah boy.

Making progress though

Kudos for making this decision, but we go see gouging because of it.

If the alternative packaging for identical sizes cost a few cents extra per unit, expect for it to be rounded up to the dollar, as per usual with the operations of food outlets.

Good initiative but it still shameful a tiny tropical island like ours took so long to do this. Seems less am initiative and more a late stage bandwagon hop. We could have embraced recycling since Chase Charlie Away.

What are we doing about all the plastic? that is another thing that needs to be banned. Make people pay for biodegradable or something, ban all them plastic bottle, bags and straws.

Real ole Skool person talking! It’s amazing how those simple methods of public education were so effective but now, even with all of the social media, we don’t see it in any form.

Banning food items is a really short sighted thing because of how easily it can change.

Ban foreign fried chicken? what about local fried chicken?
Banned local fried chicken too? What about all the tiny eateries that sell fried chicken too, who policing that.
So now if you successfully ban fried chicken, everywhere going to switch to another method that barely scrapes past the legislation, example: Mexican chicken

Same goes for coke too

The big question is whether or not current crop of manufacturers/distributors can successfully make the switch to biodegradable materials.

Hope this new policy isn't some clever ruse to give a "select few" new business opportunities...:|

very good move.
if were lucky this could open up an entirely new manufacturing sector that would develop biodegradable food containers, could be hemp or even paper based. might even eventually become an internationally marketable alternative.

manufacture or assemble ? we will need a paper mill to manufacture biodegradable paper and other tree-free materials at an international level

Gone Pricesmart today. A set of trolley-carts haphazardly near the entrance with all sort of food items, cups spilled with soda inside the cart, half eaten pizza and all the other nasty junk they sell in the food court. Food wrappers all over the ground. And the trolleys parked right next to the the 2 big blue bins by the door eh. It have rel, rel stink people in this country. Imagine they leaving the public in that state, what about their own homes? This kind of mentality is actually what has Trinidad in such a bad state.

true, but look at it this way
we had catered to build a hotel for a potbellied pig-looking jamaican jackass that would have cost taxpayers anywhere from 2-8 billion dollars, I seriously doubt that a large paper processing mill would cost anywhere near that, so the state could assist locals in the manufacturing sector interested in developing it with financial aid and charge a nominal interest, boosting local employment and possibly earning forex.
hell it could even be built and retained as a state owned entity, but for that it must be run with profitability and accountability as it's primary focus so as to avoid turning into Petrotrin v2.0
