Dunno if argon can be used in aluminium bottles
but I brought down my own co2 aluminium bottle a while back for much cheaper than buying from igl.

You can't fill the CO2 tank with argon. Argon cylinders are made differently to withstand the higher pressure of compressed gas (about 2015 PSI). CO2 tanks are designed for liquid. The only pressure is the vapor pressure from the boiling liquid in the tank, normally less than 500PSI.

Info got online with regards to switching gas in cylinders.

I thought the same thing and went ahead and bought a 110cf argon tank.

But the issue is one of downtime. If you purchase your bottle then you need to drop it off at couva or aranguez and wait 5-7days before you get it back.

With a rented tank you can just drop off and collect another one and be on your way.

If you intend on buying multiple tanks then this wont probably be an issue.

Correct. I bought two from the guy who sells gas by aranguez Savannah.

Yeah, I rented the big steel co2 tank and only refilled like every 2-3 years
I basically lost the deposit and more in rent compared to buying my own soda type aluminum tank

Yeah I think this is the main deciding factor.

It really depends on how often you intend to refill.

I do quite a bit of stainless steel Tig welding. With a large furick cup I flow about 20-22 cfh and then another 4-5 cfh for back purging. I eat through gas like crazy.

Probably some time down the road I can afford to have multiple 220cf owned tanks.

I'll take some shots of the next project. Current mocking it up now.

Some Subaru headers using 304 Stainless.

Bumping for advice
Got an older Miller Maxstar 300LX on a deal. Practically new
No TIG torch, cables, hoses, nada, just the unit
Previously I had a cheap fluxcore, so never had to deal with buying gas etc
So looking for advice on what, where, and how much, including argon

You need Ar for TIG welding. You will need a bottle (rent or buy) and a regulator. You can stick weld also.

Edoos, SSL, etc., will have a regulator, cables and TIG torch. I would guess about $200 for an Ar regulator but not sure on the cables because of quality, amperage and length.

If you plan on SMAW, you could do most of your welding with a stick until you are sure that the machine works well. You will use the same ground cable and clamp for TIG.

Looks like a badass rig there.

You might want to bring down your own bottle because igl only rents the huge bottles which are a pain to carry and you pay a monthly rental which will likely equate to the cost of buying your own.

The challenge with owning a bottle is the turn around time. 4-7 days

Yeah this is ideal.

Hopefully I can reach a point where I can have two own bottles.

I refilled a rented bottle a few days ago - very stringent process due to COVID (btw)

I only just cleared out my rental tab after ~16months. Came up to about $350.

I must say, it burned a little - but overall wasn't a bad price.

you must weld a lot to need to bottles.

I only weld for a hobby and cleared my deposit and more after over 2 years, shoulda buy my own bottle from the start.

I Tig weld reactive metals quite alot (mostly stainless but a little inconel and titanium).

So a great deal of my argon is spent on postflow and backpurging.

Nah it's one of the standard heavy iron bottles. Just smaller than the usual 220cf that they rent.

I only use it for mobile jobs now.
