i remember paying high prices under UNC. Agro Bank had plenty issues under UNC too, but then it's that level of thinking that retards the country's development.

This info might be more for the farmers thread. Zaboca trees are plentiful but bears little or no fruits as when they flower they need specific nitrients to cause the fruits to form. Flower power from MAFAS is one solution.

Just remember not to be greedy as when the trees start to fruit, you will have to break off some immature fruits as the branches will break = no Zaboca ...........

The US seems to enjoy much lower prices though, probably imported from central america I think.

California has more than 50,000 acres of avocados planted by professional growers.

I always wondered why zaboca was not cultivated in a farm manner on large quantity scale

on the other hand I know someone who has an old estate in guaya with hundreds of lime, lemon trees
He approached supermarkets etc in the past to sell but they would only be interested in small quantities at a time
not more than a bucket which doesnt make sense for him to deliver etc on a regular basis
So they basically rot on the floor apart from occasional orders from those juice drink folks

But Zaboca does mostly grow in PNM areas.

Indian areas like say Caroni East for example is all Clay Dirt, it cannot grow in clay cause clay retains the water as its crap dirt. The whole east west corridor is sandy dirt and a whole lot of mountains, that is where the most fertile land in the country is, places like El Dorado etc

Unfortunately people build houses on the best agriculture land in this country, a dumb move.

Poor soil drainage is the number one reason for tree failure. You also need more than one tree planted closely together to get good fruit production.

3-4 mangoes for 30-35 dollars vs 6 apples or 6 pears for 20
4 sapodillas for 30 dollars vs 6 american plums for 20

Volume, economies of scale etc etc.

Supply and demand, why else?

Foreign countries grow avocado in massive numbers and they are much much larger countries in size by land mass so they can afford to grow a lot more they have the space.

In Trinidad people does main have a tree in their yard and very few places farm this thing because only select places can avocado even grow. It generally has to be hilly places with good stoney soil and drainage.

when zaboca cheap I buy a lot, when it's pricey I leave it alone. Noticed lemons were ridiculously priced of late, there are some corner or housefront vendors that have a lot, I'll wait until they're approaching their end of life and buy em out cheap
