Security guard charged with murder in supermarket shooting incident

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » February 13th, 2017, 7:58 pm

CNC3 - The security guard who shot and killed former-convict Verne “Pumba” Sambury at a supermarket in New Grant last week, will appear in the Princes Town Magistrates' Court today, charged with murder.

Image

The instructions were given by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions over the weekend.

Initial reports had indicated that Sambury was shot by a security guard after attempting to break into the Persad's Supermarket and attacking a security guard with a bottle in the process.

Sambury died in hospital the following day.

Video footage shared on social media last week, showed the incident, both of the shooting and also the aftermath, showing Sambury lying in the carpark bleeding, without any assistance.

Relatives had claimed that Sambury went to purchase a loaf of bread, which contradicted police reports that he was attempting to break into the supermarket.

Well there's the official message from the government then.

Criminals are worth more than tax paying citizens doing their jobs everyday to keep this country functioning.
It's now official. The country is in such dire distress, but the message is "Don't even try to defend, just take it and dead."

Amazing!!!!

Security guard was simply doing his job, defending himself from an ex convict and he is gonna be charged with murder for doing his job and protecting his own life?

So if someone breaks into our home what are we supposed to do exactly?

I'm not supporting the "bandit" but the video evidence shows that his life was not threatened. It his highly probable that the security guard was not properly trained to carry a firearm based on what transpired in the video. That situation could have been dealt with differenty if he had proper training. The victim was shot three times! Nobody rendered assistance! .... If the guard had rendered assistance, he would have had a better chance of getting off.

This is what it's all about. The force used was not necessary as a response to that threat. One shot would have stopped him. Even one to the leg.

If all his so-called "friends" videoing and galleying themselves for the crowd actually rendered the least bit of assistance to him, he'd probably still be alive today.

The Precept Exam and the course content have nothing to do with use of the force continuum.

So the guard could be fully trained...as per legal requirement...and still be woefully unprepared.

The system is inadequate to deal with 2017 realities.

Is there a civil case to be heard brought by Pumba s family against Special Elite and the grocery?

I absolutely agree with this statement. There was a point in the video where the guy who got shot looked as though he reached for something in his waist. I would have shot him to - except in the head - and pump several more into him as well.

The justice system in this country is so back to front that it does not equate the unparalleled level of crimes or criminal threats. So the way things going, look out for me to be arrested as well if my family or loved ones are ever threatened in this matter.

always thought ppl licensed to use firearms are taught to shoot centre mass - not for a specific body part....unless is some trick shot competition....

might be the DPPs way of telling the population what can happen if you are granted a FUL and happen to be in a similar incident based on the recent calls for citizens to be granted FULs..

He needs a good lawyer... I can think up of a few ways he could plea self defense..

I think he might have moved a bit hasty but I don't think he was completely wrong.

The thing is if he did not react and the Spranger guy stabbed someone with the bottle, everyone would have said what he has a gun for, he is a coward etc. You just can't please Trini's.

By all appearances, the initial beef was with a woman in the store and it was only when the now deceased rushed inside as if to snatch the same woman, did the guard's security training kick in and he became physical and pulled back the aggressor out of the store to protect the employees and patrons.
When a bottle in a case outside the store was reached for (but not paid for) the gun come out.
Two wrongs doh make a right...sad in both cases

the question we have to ask ourselves is What can we learn?

Self Defense concept is extremely simple... to me. Your LIFE must be in danger. Or extreme bodily harm. The guy wasnt even brandishing a weapon.
This was excessive force used by the guard. Plain and simple. If the incident had escalated to a certain point and he shot him he wouldnt be going thru this now BUT
The action(white jersey)& reaction (guard) werent commensurate.
Bottom line you cant go around shooting people willy nilly.
The responses that the guard was justified make me rethink my stance that we should allow more persons firearms.
Cuff to face. pow shot dead. I was fearful for my life. Concoct story about how he was reaching for something... Really?

Lots of the comments in here jist proves why they wont allow all access to fuls. Unless a person or animal is an immediate threat to your life or someone elses life you cannot draw firearm and start offloading shots.

If the man was trespassing and violating a court order then effect an arrest and use whatever necessary force to restrain him

Allyuh want to wait till the less right up on him, and able to take the hand gun, for the guard to take action?
Nah, the less was escalating actions, and made an aggressive move. Went from 40 to 90 in no time. So the guard reacted

So since said Mr Guard did not end up shooting him however this so called ex convict notice the guard was flashing off his weapon and decided he should return a favor and Mr Guard end up dead then it would of been justice ?

Whatever the consequences for the guard, I am glad he killed and did not maim for the same person to come back and exact revenge.
