THERE will be no million dollar winner at this year's Chutney Soca Monach competition. Government has slashed its funding by 75 per cent.

The first prize will now be $500,000, according to Southex Trade Shows and Promotions Ltd which hosts the event.

In a statement, Southex said that the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs advised by letter that the sum of $1,180,000 has been allocated to the 2017 prizes at the 'Pick 2' Chutney Soca Monarch this year.

“As such, the producers have made major adjustments to the prize structure of the show, which has been traditionally funded by Government”.

Southex said that in 2016, prizes were cut from $4.5 million to $3.5 million.

“This has now been reduced further to $1.18 million – representing a cut of approximately 75 per cent in prize monies for the annual Indo-Caribbean event", said Southex.

The prizes for 2017 are now as follows –

CHUTNEY SOCA MONARCH

1st - $500,000

2nd - $150,000

3rd - $75,000

4th – 10th $25,000 each

THE WORLD'S ULTIMATE CHUTNEY CHALLENGE

1st - $100,000

2nd – 10th $20,000

These prizes represent the full allocation of monies, which will be paid directly to artistes.

ALL organisations receiving prize monies over the years, while collecting gate and bar profits with nothing to show for it should also face same. (car trunk of money should never be a financial measure)

Agreed... but that doesn't mean that we should continue to spend wildly on this.
And nobody even start talking about "supporting local talent", because the definition of talent is questionable

About time especially in light of PanTrinbago....we need to seriously rethink our attitude to talent and culture.

Study that some of the allocated money going to a category for old chutney. Men who done make their living off particular song e.g. chris garcia getting a second bite.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALL these organizations should be self-sufficient and if not they should go out of business.

Chutney, Soca Monarch, Pan Trinbago, TUCO, NCBA - All of them should NOT get tax payer funding.
