Ramleela celebrations at three locations in central Trinidad have been hampered by a decision by the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) to turn the lights off at 10.30p.m.
The Ramleela committees had written to T&TEC requesting an extension to 11pm for the duration of the celebrations.
However, T&TEC corporate communications manager Annabelle Brasnell explained that lighting at recreation grounds are turned off at 9pm. She said extensions were granted on request to 10pm.
“In this case T&TEC went past the 10pm extension to 10.30pm. Every hour is an additional cost for running the lights. So we did what we could do,” she said.
Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan wrote to T&TEC requesting an extension in lighting to 11pm from September 24 for two weeks. The request was made for Green Park, Pierre Road and Stalagnite recreation grounds.
T&TEC responded that extension was approved for 10.30pm at the three venues.
But councillor for Charlieville Faaiq Mohammed said the decision to turn off the lights half an hour before the requested time had hampered Ramleela celebrations.
He said in previous years, T&TEC had granted approval to turn off the lights at 11pm.
He said, “This year the Ramleela celebrations have been plagued by darkness. As Councillor for the electoral district of Charlieville I made a request to Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) that the lighting at the Pierre Road Recreational ground be extended to facilitate the celebrations. Further, the Mayor of Chaguanas, His Worship Alderman Gopaul Boodhan made a request to the T&TEC to have the lighting extended until 11 p.m.”
Mohammed said T&TEC advised that the lighting can only be extended up to 10.30 p.m. with no explanation. “We have never encountered difficulty in having the lights adjusted for longer hours during the period of Ramleela until this year. This is wholly unacceptable as it would hinder the Ramleela Celebrations. Such hindrance would be an embarrassment to the hard working organizing committee who have spent months in preparation for the celebrations to be left without lights,” he said.
Mohammed claimed that there were other recreational facilities where the lighting is extended to 11 p.m. and beyond. “As such, we are pleading to the T&TEC to extend the lighting to facilitate the showcasing of our culture,” he said.
Brasnell said, however, that she was not aware of any venue with lighting to 11pm.
Mayor Gopaul Boodhan said he was meeting T&TEC officials to discuss the residents' concerns.

The committees should have made accommodations to finish 30 minutes earlier.
That is poor planning and use of the resources one has, and reflects badly on the committees.
The newspaper headline, of course, is badly done and is there to instigate bacchanal.

It isn't like a TTEC crew rides in and switches off the lights. Those grounds with floodlights on the perimeter run on a timer, so at 10.30 pm, the lights go out. What the organizers need is an earlier start, or a tighter show in the time allotted.

They don't all run on a timer. For certain recreation grounds a nearby resident has the key to the electrical room and switch the lights on and off.

everywhere else seems to be doing it without any lighting issues. seems more like a management issue on the part of the Ramleela organizers at those locations.
