What Height?? - Safety Harness

Postby Groovemaster » September 15th, 2016, 9:11 pm

HSE Tuners.....

Whats the correct "legal" height one would need a safety harness if on a temporary work platform/scaffolding?

Is there still different requirements for construction and Gen Industry?

Anything above 6', however the tie off point should obviously be higher.

some places are reducing the height from six feet.
they have started using the short lanyards without the shock absorber for heights less than 6 feet (although the policy still remains at 6 feet)
check your company guidelines . most company now try to be better or on par with country regs.

Where I work, anything 4 feet and over requires full fall protection. Only retractable lanyards are used given the shorter distance. Regular lanyards would be ineffective.

any height above 6ft u must be tied off as LTI more likely to happen from that distance free fall and further.

Fall PROTECTION is needed 6ft and up in construction... howeverrr, fall protection doesnt mean harness alone...

you can have barricades around the platform etc... but some companies dont realise that, and they say harness harness harness.. at 6ft, sometimes with nothing overhead to tie too...den if u fall, harness extendeds, and u break your legs...

Thats why they have the static short lanyard, ineartia reels. etc
Also you cannot tie off to any point. it have regulations on the point. I think the point of attachment supposed to support like 2.5 tonnes.(5000lbs) or must specifically be designed as an attachment point

i was curious also so instead of guessing i looked it up

"What are the fall protection requirements for all scaffolds?

Employers must provide fall protection for each employee on a scaffold more than 10 feet (3.1 meters) above a lower level. 1926.451(g)(1)

A competent person must determine the feasibility and safety of providing fall protection for employees erecting or dismantling supported scaffolds. 1926.451(g)(2)

How will I know what kind of fall protection to provide for a specific-type of scaffold?"

taken from
https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA3 ... a3150.html

so scaffolding has a different requirement from fixed surface which is 6 feet
Again this is osha individual companies might have more stringent rules

and you cannot tie off to a scaffolding
