Postby SkettellGod » April 6th, 2016, 8:20 am

good day tuners,
I'm trying to gather some information as what influences the choice of oil used in your engines.

can you state whether gas or diesel and oil type/ brand?

Well in my Altis (gas) I used Toyota because the car was a Toyota until the oil started to disappear. Then I switched to LiquiMoly 20W50 because of online reviews.

In the Sportero, I started using 15W40 Chevron Delo from PriceSmart cause it was cheap and then I switched to Valvoline Premium Blue 5W40. I won two gallons in a competition and noticed the engine ran quieter (chain drive) with it so I stuck with it.

In my current ride (Sportero)I use amsoil because I started using it and never stopped.
In my previous ride (built subaru), I swore by royal purple.
In my ride before that (civic), I used QuakerState.
In my wife's car, I use LiquiMoly.
Most of the oils are good, it's just a matter of personal preference, pocket and following the schedule.

My first car was a cs 3 Lancer - only used Castrol Syntec
Second car CY Lancer - Firm only used Total (Dealer service, their choice)
Car now is a Tucson - Shell (Dealer service, inside the engine bay has a sticker recommending Shell, not sure if Massy or Hyundai put it there)

I use oils based on if they wear down due to excess friction.

Water-based
Oil-based
Silicone-based

Those are the three types that I am familiar with, brand is always subject to what is available at the time.
I do prefer however not to use those that has the warming effect as the extra heat seems to cause breakdown a lot faster than I anticipate.

I would never buy into the manufacture branded oil for the simple reason that it is outsourced and rebranded their own
I've been using amsoil for the last 6-8 yrs in all the vehicles in our yard and never had issues

Tiida:
NP synthetic runs surprisingly well up to 5K.
Used Mobil 5/10-30 or without issues for 7K change (using nissan filter).
Currently evaluating Valvoline.

Some have said that something in the np oils accelerate wear on rubber seals/gaskets in your engine
However I'm unable to confirm..... But I did switch from NP to Valvoline

Redline 10W30 in car for the past year and no problems so far.

Used to use Redline 10w/40 in my bike before I used it cuz it had special friction additives for the wet clutches. Noticed less of a drop off in clutch performance coming down to servicing interval with it. However, I got some leaking cuz the engine was pretty old and the oil is a fully synth. Bike used to run like a thief tho.

Used Total in the car before that (manufacturers recommendation) with no problems.

OP once you stick to major oil brands and proper service intervals you good to go. All of the major oil brands exceed the requirements for daily drivers. Any of the following brands would be good enough.

My fav's
Redline - Personal opinion
Amsoil - Opinion of friends
Mobil 1- Opinion of friends

Other good enough brands
Royal purple - Online reviews
Total - Personal opinion
Castrol- Opinion of friends
Kendall - Online reviews

Kendall and Royal purple may be good but I have no personal experience with them so they not in my fav's group.

Factors affecting choice of engine oil:

1) Oil change interval
2) Professional and mechanically inclined people reviews
3) Price of oil and filter appropriate for oil change interval

Right now, I use Amsoil XL engine oil and Bosch Distance Plus oil filters, with oil change intervals of 10,000km.

Using NP oil for some time. Engine overheated for quite some time but it held. No change in performance. Driving everyday long distances for hours. Cold start to long run it holds out very well. Engine idles smooth. Was told it was made for this climate. Know someone who uses it also. No sludge build up as other brands he told me. But then again its being used on engines 20years+.

Been using NP ultra 20w50 in all my vehicles for the last 10years (b13, Prelude, Lancer, 280c) Purolator oil filters as a rule. Reason- never had a problem or any of the horror stories people speak of and cost and I change my oil at 5k intervals anyway...

using shell oil 10W 40 fully synthetic (blue bottle) in my u14.....along with a fram filter.extended life filter.

oil was good for 8165kms could have done more but due to the recent tune up the oil had to change - carbon deposits in the oil..

what influences my choice.....mech recommended plus it works well..never bothered to change brands to see.

in the march i use mobil 1 10W-30....and a nissan filter.....i change that every 6 mths.
nissan manual recommends 10W30 and i went synthetic cause.....why mobil 1.....where i buy my filter they sell that oil...so i take it....no problems with oil...or filter...
