PC Anson Benjamin, who was shot while responding to a robbery in St Clements, has died at hospital.
PC Benjamin passed away at 11.15 this morning at the San Fernando General Hospital, where he was in a medically-induced coma at the Intensive Care Unit.
No.14862 PC Anson Benjamin, 45, of Stewart Street, Pleasantville, had 16 years of dedicated service and was a father of five children.
PC Benjamin along with a female officer from the Ste. Madeline Police Station had responded to a report at around 8:40pm on Monday of an attempted robbery in progress at the Chao Young Supermarket on the Naparima Mayaro Road, St Clements.
Upon arrival at the location, PC Benjamin sought to gain access to the back of the building through a rear exit.
As he opened a back door located on the western side of the building, when he was fired upon by one of the two assailants, suffering a single gunshot wound to the head.
The suspects escaped on foot into nearby bushes.
