THERE was standstill traffic along the flooded South Trunk Road in the vicinity of the Mosquito Creek, La Romaine on Wednesday.
Motorists were stuck for hours during the morning commute.
Member of Parliament for Fyzabad Dr Lackram Bodoe said he made a request via text message to Minister of Works Fitzgerald Hinds to assist.
Bodoe said water swamped the roadway around 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday, and worsened into Wednesday morning. He said there was rain in Fyzabad on Tuesday which could have contributed.
On Wednesday Bodoe told the Express: “ Water has been trapped on the south bound lane of the South Truck Road. They had installed a pump as a temporary initiative to pump out the water . A call was made last night and I was informed the pump was not working and I had brought it to the attention of the Minister of Works and Transport via a text message this morning.”
About the trapped water Bodoe said: “ It seems to be an intermittent problem, it comes and goes and it appears to occur whenever the rain falls.
When the rain falls, the waves comes over the seawall.”
He added that he suspected that the unfinished work on the Solomon Hochoy Highway to Point Fortin could be a possible reason why there was flooding.
Chairman of the Siparia Corporation, Leo Doodnath told the Express : “ I will have the engineers to look at the creek to see why it is flooding.”
Police said on Wednesday, there were no complaints of major incidents happening along the route and there was not much could be done in such a situation. Police said the most they could do was to divert traffic but that would depend on high the water levels were.
Last month, the creek also followed and an unusual high tide was blamed.
Another member of the Corporation said that in 2013, there was massive flooding in November and the National Infrastructure Development Company (Nidco) had undertaken works to prevent another occurrence. Former Nidco's president Carson Charles had admitted then that the preliminary work of the highway's extension to Point Fortin was to be blamed for the flooding.
