Swimmer to attempt swim from Trinidad to Tobago

It's never been done before - swimming the distance between the islands of Tobago and Trinidad, however within the coming days, marathon swimmer, Kathleen Wilson, will attempt the 23 mile journey.

Every year, Wilson, 52, embarks upon her 'big swim of the year', and decided upon the stretch between Tobago and Trinidad for her 2015 challenge, as no one has ever attempted such a swim.

Since 1997, the Charleston City, South Carolina councilwoman, who is also a musician, has participated in 14 marathon swims, including the English Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar and Hawaii's Molokai Channel. Wilson has completed all but her 17-mile Cook Strait swim in New Zealand, in March 2013, when she was stopped because of symptoms of hypothermia.

However, Kathleen has her sights sets on completing this open water challenge and despite finishing seven swims of equal or greater distance, the experienced athlete described this endeavor as the “most uncertain swim ever” because of the currents. In an interview with the Charleston publication, "Post Nd Courier", Wilson said, “There is a major current running between the islands, part of the much larger Caribbean system, and we have to account for a major westerly push while trying to swim south. It is entirely possible to miss the island (Trinidad) if not calculating drift correctly, not swimming fast enough or weather conditions such as swells, wind and chop make for a slower than normal swim, like my Molokai swim." In my recollection this is not the first time this has been attempted or done. In the mid 1980's- early 90's there was more than one swimmer that I believe would have attempted this swim , with maybe one man actually completing the swim without a support boat .

Yep he did actually, met him about a month or two ago when he was hitting me the stories..really interesting stuff.

Yea Raymond told me he completed the run, I don't know what support he had though. I worked with him while at WASA, very humble guy so I didn't mistrust his story. Even at his age now, he's still fitter than most.
