Cops nab car dealer after conning 29 buyers
By Rickie Ramdass rickie.ramdass@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Sep 13, 2013 at 9:16 PM ECT
Story Updated: Sep 13, 2013 at 11:43 PM ECT
AFTER more than a year on the run from law enforcement officers in connection with the scamming of hundreds of thousands of dollars from unsuspecting car buyers, a 28-year-old Couva man was taken into police custody on Thursday evening.
Officers of the North-Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) embarked on a week-long sting opera-
tion which led to the arrest of the man in the car park of Trincity Mall in Trincity as he was in the process of “selling” another vehicle.
Officers said the man was wanted by Fraud Squad detectives for conning at least 29 people across the country out of cash, pretending he had vehicles for sale.
The man, police said, would usually convince car buyers to pay him various sums of money, ranging from $25,000 to $65,000, as deposits for the purchase of different types of vehicles.
What he had been doing was renting or leasing cars from legitimate car rental companies and selling them as his own, said officers.
After purchasing the cars, the victims were forced to return the vehicles after being challenged by the companies from which they were rented, police said.
The man would usually advertise his “business” in the classified section of newspapers and on social networking sites, according to officers.
It was while he was in the process of conducting another transaction with a potential car buyer that officers, led by Sgt Cornelius Samuel, made the arrest.
He was handed over to Fraud Squad officers and is expected to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate sometime next week.

I'm sure he'll get fined about half as much as he took from one victim.

You think he conned anyone from "East Port of Spain"? Doubt it. That would ensure proper punishment.
