RBR will be happy with this decision for Kimi to join Ferrari. Chances are the two drivers will split points making it easier for Vettel to go for maximum pts with Riccardo at his side.

Maria de Villota has been found dead in a hotel room in Seville, just days before she was due to launch the story of her life, and recovery from serious injury, in the Spanish city.

The 33-year old hit the headlines when she was appointed as a development driver for the Marussia F1 team late in 2011, and again when her first outing with the team - a straight-line test at RAF Duxford - ended in tragedy when her car accelrrated into a half-raised tail-lift on one of the team's support trucks.

The accident left her with serious head injuries, and cost her the use of her right eye, but de Villota appeared to have overcome the setbacks to return to motorsport in roles with both the Spanish motorsports authority and the FIA's Commission for Women and Motorsport.

She made her return to the F1 paddock at her home event in Barcelona, sporting what had become a trademark colourful eye-patch, and reports of her death rocked the paddock in Suzuka, where the Japanese Grand Prix is due to take place this weekend.

de Villota's passing was confirmed by her family via a message on her Facebook page which stated that "Maria is gone. She had to go to heaven and all the angels. We thank God for the year-and-a-half more that he left us."

The Marussia team issued a brief statement in response to the news of de Villota's death.

“It is with great sadness that we learned a short time ago of the news that Maria de Villota has passed away.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Maria's family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Crash.net also sends its condolences to all of Maria's family and friends at this sad time.

RIP Maria de Villota

Sad news, she was a great asset to FIA and in large the Motorsport fraternity.

After the incident, she showed great strength and commendable perseverance towards life.

Condolences to the family.

Lewis' car busy as f#!@

Already a crash under his belt for the Jerez testing. Hope that's not a sign of things to come.

So far the Force India VJM07 car is my favourite.

Ugliest goes to Caterham CT05.

The double prong nose Lotus is the best looking of the bunch so far. If only looks would translate into speed.

Caterham's nose treatment is ugly as hell.

they honestly don't sound as bad as we'd think they would have. Ferrari sounds a bit mental. Honda sounds a bit hoover-ish

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/formula-1-rosberg-wins-hamilton-vettel-go-australia-074914536--f1.html

Mercedes star Rosberg got a perfect start to claim the lead from team-mate and pole-sitter Hamilton, and never looked troubled thereafter.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo claimed an impressive second place in front of his home crowd, but is expected to be stripped of his accolade as a subsequent investigation showed that his car had consistent exceeded the maximum allowable fuel flow rate allowed under 2014 rules.

McLaren's Kevin Magnussen a stunning third place on his F1 debut, with Jenson Button close behind. If Ricciardo's disqualification is confirmed, both will be promoted one place.

The shocks of the race were the early retirements of Hamilton and Vettel, however, both of whom suffered misfiring cylinders that saw them missing pace from the start.

Button finished fourth and Fernando Alonso fifth, but perhaps the performance of the day came from Vallteri Bottas, who came sixth after twice scything through almost the entire field - once at the start of the race, and then again after hitting a wall, losing his right rear tyre and limping into the pits.

The winner's joy was evident after as easy a win as could be imagined.

"Fantastic! What a car you've given me! What a car!" Rosberg yelled down the radio to his team after taking the chequered flag.

"It's great to have such an amazing silver arrow to drive," Rosberg added on the podium. "This thing was just unbelievably quick and the reliability was great as well."

Ricciardo was equally delighted after making the podium in his home race.

"Two or three weeks ago I'd have bet everything I owned that we wouldn't be standing here now," said the Aussie. "It's been an incredible turnaround - I don't know how Red Bull have done it, but they have."

Magnussen was also thrilled: "The car was just so much better than it has been," he said. "Big congratulations to the team for a great job."

Hamilton had a very different opening race, however, though he remained philosophical.

"I was driving on five cylinders - it's a bit unfortunate, but that's racing," he said.

"It's just a hiccup. There's a long way to go... I'm not concerned about anything."

Vettel tried to stay cool despite his clear frustration at the retirement after a rotten weekend that saw him qualify down in 13th.

"We lost power. We didn't understand why - cars kept passing me... At one stage I thought there was a slight improvement but then it was clear there was a big problem with the engine," he said.

Hamilton and Vettel both added that they are confident the issues could be solved quickly - and given the excellent pace of their team-mates, that seems more than likely.

Rosberg, tipped to duel with team mate Hamilton for the championship, celebrated his fourth race victory and first since last year's British Grand Prix, when he was also the beneficiary of technical mishaps to Hamilton and Vettel.

The gaping margin of victory underscored Mercedes' superior preparations for F1's technical revolution, which saw all teams struggle during winter testing with the new V6 turbocharged hybrid engines.

The glitches continued as only 14 of the 22 cars finished on a gusty day at the bumpy street circuit which was doused by a brief rain-shower early in the race.

Hamilton, who snatched pole position at the end of a wet qualifying session on Saturday, noticeably lacked power on his start and was called in by his team to retire on the third lap.

Vettel, starting twelfth after a grid penalty for one of the cars just ahead of him, also struggled at the start and retired only a few laps after Hamilton, complaining of engine performance problems.

That snapped a nine-race winning streak for the German dating back to the Belgian Grand Prix in August.

Ricciardo thrilled home fans by taking his maiden podium spot in his first race weekend with Red Bull and drove with admirable composure after being challenged by Magnussen over the closing laps.

Magnussen's podium, the first by a Dane in Formula One and the team's first since 2012, was an exact match of Hamilton's first F1 race for McLaren in 2007 when the Briton qualified fourth and finished third.

McLaren's Jenson Button finished fourth, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso fifth.

Williams driver Bottas finished sixth for his best F1 result after an outstanding race from 15th on the grid. His eight point haul was more than his team scored in all of last season.

The race began farcically, with Marussia driver Max Chilton stalling on the grid before the pre-start installation lap and his team mate Jules Bianchi then repeating the mishap, forcing a second formation lap.

Both Marussias started from pit-lane behind Lotus's Romain Grosjean, who was also dealt a drive-through penalty for leaving his garage prior to the 15-minute signal before the race.

Japan's Kamui Kobayashi lived up to his reputation as a combustible racer by ploughing into the back of Felipe Massa's Williams at the start, taking both drivers out of the race at the first corner and prompting an FIA investigation.

Most impressed by Magnussen... Not surprised by Kobayashi. Bottas was a beast on the track. I think that Williams is the Upsetter this year.

that was a an exciting F1 yesterday, love the competitiveness between the team members.
LOL @ when Mercedes told both drivers to brign the cars home safely! LOL Lewis didn't answer( typical ignoramous), where as his team mate did acknowledge his orders.

Redbull vs redbull, Mercedes Vs Mercedes, Team sahara vs team sahara, loving it.................

so since all of Vettel's wins were down to superior car, and nothing to do with skill, can we assume the same of Hamilton?
Funny how the fanboys suddenly praising his 'superior driving skills'

its over obvious that Mercedes has the upper hand this year, their engines are far MORE powerful that all their rivals.
Yes its natural for the race leader to pull away from the pack and maybe add .5 or .85 or a second per lap, but yesterdays display should see some investigations into the Mercedes vehicles.

Marussia beat Caterham and one Lotus. A few more development parts and they would be fighting in the midfield.

Strange how it's ALWAYS due to having a "superior car" every time Hamilton wins... never for his driving skill.

If any driver went "head-to-head" against an aggressive challenger,
... in EQUAL cars...
... using HARDER tyres against the challenger's SOFTER compound...
... and with the added problem of the challenger's overtaking advantage (DRS) to deal with...
and still managed to WIN!! in spite of all the disadvantages... then everyone would sing his praises to high heaven.

But when Hamilton achieves such a stunning "win", the narrow minded and biased response is always a feeble attempt to deride Hamilton's supporters as "fanboys"...

However, the REAL experts (like former F1 World Champions Niki Lauda and Jackie Stewart) are of the contrary opinion.

IMHO the latter "camp" is much more knowledgeable about rating an F1 driver's skill, when compared to our local "armchair experts/drivers".

We need a season like 1982. World champion only won one race. Turbo-charged engines blowing up all over the place.
