Piparo mud volcano a cause for concern....

Postby shake d livin wake d dead » December 3rd, 2011, 9:23 pm

This story was on news tonight..According to residents, they claim that this volcano is active once again, with loud noises coming from the volcano late at nights...One resident said that since Thursday loud sounds like "scratch bombs" were heard...Residents are now in fear as to whether the volcano would erupt again..The ODPM says they're keeping an eye on it..

well we'd see what happens.....
btw,is anyone in here affected by it? or was affected by it? erupted in 1997...

Wasn't affected, was there when it was being recorded though.
I've been hearing that talk since yesterday but I'm not close enough to hear

I remember going to the site 1 day after the last eruption. (Odpm apparantly wasn't around then). That was real devestation. Remember seeing the front portion of a 280c sticking out from the mud.

What the neighbours are saying is that with all the rain, the vents have gotten clogged so when a great enough pressure builds, it gives off a kinda mini explosion, although one house on the old Piparo Main Rd did get some damage

spoke to some pple and they said even back then there was little indication the blowout would have been at that magnitude

This is true. I had actually passed through that area a month or so before the last "big" eruption. When I asked where the mud volcano was, a fellow (at the time) laughed and showed me something resembling a couple of small pot holes in the grass just off the road.

Of course, a month later, the scene was alot different!

Piparo mud volcano waiting to erupt

Geologists see changes within the main vent

Geologists say pressure is building up beneath the surface of the Piparo mud volcano giving credence to the possibility that there could be an eruption sometime in the future. Active changes have also been seen on the surface and subsurface of the volcanic vents which erupted 22 years ago, displacing 31 families and killing livestock and birds.

During an interview, resident Pamela Khan said she hoped an accurate prediction could be made as to when the volcano will erupt. Khan said she was 12 when the volcano erupted on February 22, 1997.

"My father told me that before the eruption they were hearing hissing noises and gas was coming up from below the ground long before the volcano erupted," Khan said.

This time around she is hoping that the geoscientists' warning could enable evacuation before an eruption.
