Those hard to get boi.

I used to have to buy the 2 hole ones and cut off the tops for water barrels on the farm

carluva wrote:This is probably the wrong place to post, but I'll ask anyway.

Where can I get plastic barrels? Need a couple for water storage. Preferably those with the full diameter lid and not the ones with the two holes with plugs in them. And not the tapered ones with the screw top either. Basically something like what's in the picture minus the tap at the bottom.

What's an approximate price I can expect to pay for one?

Store it out of the weather and raised. Try to keep it dry so that neither mud, algae nor rust scale form.

What ratio cement/sand to mix for mortar to put up blocks? Would prefer a shovel measurement because I will be mixing a little at a time. Since I may be home for a while, might as well try my hand at putting up some blocks home

I read where they say mortar becomes dead after a while . Any truth in that ? Then it might be unsafe to mix too much at one time ?

Most times they will mix what is needed, you wouldn't mix a wheelbarrow full to plaster a 100 foot wall.

2 parts sand to 1 part cement

That is what I heard. Also don't keep adding cement to the scrapings on the ground and reuse it.

The ratio is usually 1:3 or 1:4. It depends on what kind of sand you have, how strong you want it, and whether cracking will be a problem.

1:2 yields a higher strength mortar that will crack easily. 1:4 is not as strong (about 2800 psi?) but will dry more slowly and crack much less.

1:3 is also a good ratio for plastering - smooth fi ish without too much loss to leveling.

I not sure if Trinidad has different standards for our climate, but i was reading up on this some time ago and it's interesting to learn the science behind it. This must be familiar to civil engineers, so any of you reading here please send feedback on our local mortar ratios.

There are four types of mortar in ANSI standards for building codes in USA: Types M, N, S, O.

Since I'll be home I'm going to be trying my hand at it and not working all day. So may just mix a small batch to work for maybe an hr or so

On a related. What is the mix for concreting a yard ? How thick it should be ?
It's gravel and cement , do you put any sand in it ? Somewhere I read they use sharp sand to make it easier to spread.
