LFP to take legal action after Liga games are suspended
The RFEF confirmed they will postpone matches from May 16 as a result of a dispute over a new TV rights law but the top flight's governing body has criticised the decision
The Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) has confirmed they are ready to take legal action over the decision to suspend all football matches in Spain.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Wednesday that there will be a strike due to a dispute with the government concerning television rights, following new legislation that was passed last week aimed at creating a more balanced distribution of rights money across the top-flight clubs in Spain.
Under old laws, Barcelona and Real Madrid earned three times as much as other clubs in the Primera Division as they were able to negotiate the sale of their own broadcasting rights, but the Spanish government gave the green light to a new ruling which would see 50 per cent of TV money distributed evenly across the 20 top-flight teams.
However, the RFEF and president Angel Maria Villar, as well as the players' union, have come out in opposition to the new ruling and backed a hiatus in competitive matches.
Following a meeting on Wednesday, the RFEF published a statement in which they alleged they had not been consulted properly over the changes and complained of a "lack of respect" on the part of the government.
"Problems with amateur football have not been resolved and there were no efforts made by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports to find a solution during the last three months," the statement reads.
"Royal Decree-Law 5/2015, of April 30, has received the express support of the RFEF repeatedly. We want to make clear that our most important complaints didn't affect the economic benefits for the clubs, the league, or football in general.
"Unlike other organisations, the RFEF never received the draft of the law, as we had asked, with the intention of offering contributions so as to improve it. Only at the last moment did they offer us partial information on a fraction of the data.
"This attitude, together with the contents of the law, have been considered by the board of directors of the RFEF as a lack of respect and consideration towards the governing body of the whole of Spanish football, which has been ignored and negated by the government of Spain."
The RFEF also confirmed that the Association for Spanish Footballers (AFE) had backed their desire to call an indefinite strike from May 16.
The decision means the final two rounds of La Liga action, in which Barcelona and Real Madrid are poised to continue their fight for the title, are set to be suspended, along with the Copa del Rey final between Luis Enrique's side and Athletic Bilbao.
The LFP have since released a statement to confirm they will take whatever action is necessary against the decision to postpone matches and insist the RFEF have acted outside the law.
"The LFP has taken the corresponding legal actions to the necessary judicial and administrative bodies, in defence of the rights and legitimate interests of the clubs, as well as the rights of the very professional competitions that it organises and that have been grossly affected by the decision by the RFEF," their statement reads.
"The decision taken by the RFEF is null and void by law, not just for formal reasons, as it was not included in the day-to-day activities of the Delegate Commission, but also for material reasons, given that the Sports Law and the current Coordination Agreement attributes the LFP the right to organise professional competitions and approve the sporting calendar of said competitions.
"For its part, the LFP has requested that the competent bodies reveal the names of those responsible in order to assess how many disciplinary actions may have to arise.
"Additionally, the LFP expressly reserves the right to take legal action to claim for the serious damages as well as any financial, sporting, social or any other type of harm that may arise from today's decision by the RFEF being hypothetically enacted upon, in the name of both the affiliated clubs as well as for the professional football competitions themselves.
"In the Royal Decree [concerning TV rights], the Spanish government has understood the social and sporting awareness professional football should possess, and which is currently being put at risk by entities with interests other than those which benefit football and Spanish sports in general.
"La Liga de Futbol Profesional calls all the affiliated clubs to an Extraordinary General Assembly on Monday, May 11 2015."
Real Madrid sack manager Carlo Ancelotti after disappointing season
Carlo Ancelotti has been fired as manager of Real Madrid, club president Florentino Perez announced on Monday.
After winning the Champions League in his first season in charge, Ancelotti failed to claim any major trophies in 2014-15, leading the club to announce his departure two days after the end of their campaign.
"My talk will be very short, but I want to say that today the board has decided to relieve Carlo Ancelotti of duties as Real Madrid coach," Perez said at a news conference. "It has been a very difficult decision to make for the board.
"But we are not here to make easy decisions, but to make those which are best for an institution that is globally recognised."
Perez also said Real Madrid would announce Ancelotti's replacement "next week."
