Every time I go through caroni swamp, I am thankful a large area is protected. It's such an important nursery for our fish.

I don't own an actual baitcaster but I do cast with conventionals particularly with a speedmaster 4 and 4/0 senator. It's really a matter of preference and convenience. Does require some training to get used to casting with it but it does outcast a spinning reel and offers the extra line capacity as well as more fighting power. Hawaiians solely cast with senators for ulua for that reason. I never actually fish with it from the surf, i go out to a savannah near me with 3 ounce weights to practice casting.

Used baitcasts on an off...theyre a pain in the rass.

Plenty birdsnests. Newer ones have better brakes but can't totally eliminate spool overun tangles.

Better control and handling tho...overhand casting and less line twist than a spinner.

Baitcasts cast further than spinners. But the latest gen of spinners spooled with braided line is reducing that advantage.

We did so so this easter weekend

Bumpie and Drunken master landed a few good reds and count less grunts, Bumpie snagged a 32" gar

I landed about 5 toad fish, a fat cat, a 28" lady fish and grunts.

Others caught a few fish as well, not bad for a day when we were embarrassing a boater out by the 5 islands and a sucky tide

I also lost something big, tho either an eel or ray

I have a bait casting reel ; bird nesting is real pressure and u cannot throw into the wind.

Prior to purchasing it was explained to me that spinning reels ( rights size) can achieve the same result as bait casting; but I still played harden and purchased the bait casting .

Regret it now due to problems in mastering its use and limited time to go fishing these days.

If you set your spool tension correctly, you shouldn't have a problem with birdnesting. Hang your weight in the air in freespool and adjust it until it just starts to drop. Also you need to watch your lure or lead and thumb it just when it's about to hit water so the spool doesn't overrun.

Yea I did all that. Watched some YouTube videos. Placed a small sinker and tried it.
But need to practice a lot more

most modern conventional reels have magnetic cast control, so while your weight is int he air it's not going to over spin, the problem is when it hits the water. This when you have to keep an eye on it and mash your thumb down hard on the spool to stop the birds nest. Even el cheapo reels cast well until they hit the water. If it's too much then just use a spinner for casting and keep the conventionals for trolling.

Actually dat is for spinning reels, it allows one to cast further and also eliminates the braid line dragging on one's finger while casting. I hv one on my 10 ft rod, it helps to get extra distance on the cast when u really need it, it reduces casting friction greatly on release.

Feathering the spool before it lands is good practice but once your tension is set properly and your casting technique is good, it's not necessary. You can cast and it will naturally slow down when it hits. It's the physics of your casting arc, if you shoot right at the water, your weight is hitting at full speed and like wise the spool is keeping up and will overrun due to the sudden stop. With a proper casting arc, your weight shoots into the air and begins to slow with gravity, the spool also slows at that point and by the time it hits the water the spool is just barely trotting along.
