On another note, while we are on gear porn, added a wide angle to my arsenal.

Mini review:
Good: Sharp.. really sharp. Insane DOF. If you set it to f/5.6 at the right focus distance, you don't need to use AF (which is blazing fast), just point and shoot and everything in focus. Can focus really close. Built like a tank. Decent focal range.

Bad/ Gotchas: Lens can get in the way of even an SB 900 mounted on top of my camera if you are too close to your subject. Huge (translates into expensive) filter size, F/4 really is not that bright, and in dark situations, your flash has a huge area to cover, diffusing and lessening its effective power.

In use: Using this lens, I ended up using it at either the widest or around 16mm for group and Full length body shots and shot it at f/4 all the time. For closeups, I went straight to 24mm to minimise distortion. I kept asking myself if I would prefer the Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX (which I only used once and not in an event shoot). A little wider and faster would be worth it in my opinion if you do events, but I am left to wonder if I would shoot the tokina at f/4 just to get extra DOF and sharpness anyway. 4mm is not much more on the long end, but we all know that the further you move back from a person when doing a portrait, the less fat you will make them look. I switched to my 50mmf/1.4 anyway for headshots/ portraits. If you buy it you won't regret it.

First night out with this lens:

Right up in that conversation, standing almost next to the guy on the right and still got the whole group.

Nice nikon 12-24!

I agree, that tokina f/2.8 would do much better on events esp when flash isn't allowed (eg church weddings or museums or live theatre performances). My own Sigma 10-20 f/4.5-5.6 does well but I occasionally found myself wanting a bit more light in those same situations I listed above.

Congrats on the new gear!

Thanks Lighthammer. Going to replace my D90 with a used D7000 also just now. Really wanted to save for whenever a D400 going to come out but Nikon has other plans.

Shot these at the recent SeaBoard Marine CMRC event. It was some of the most fun I've had shooting, even after getting drenched. It really reminded me how much I've improved and that I have further still to go.

I've been looking through the 5d classic users group on Flickr. Some of these guys putting me to shame, the image quality they m an age to get out of the camera is astonishing to me. Meanwhile I'm still struggling with mine.

Don't harp on what others can do with similar or even sometimes lesser equipment , keep it in mind and know that you need to improve .

That camera, the kit lens (!8-55mm VR) with an external flash is all you need to start.

I suggest you buy used here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1457523931142523/

For a beginner, you can get a D40 for next to nothing. Heck, I learnt photography on a film camera (Note, I no longer support this approach as it has become too expensive). Try A D3100. A D3000 is not on my recommended list though. Would not buy anything older than a D90 which still gives decent results and is dirt cheap.

Did you check out the local options on the FB group? Personally, I would skip the 5X00 series if you have that amount of money and go for a 7X00 series camera. Only reason being that you can trigger an external flash with the on camera flash and can't in the 3X00 and 5X00 Nikons. In that same FB group there is A D300 for 1800, great to learn on but really kinda outdated.

50mm f1.8
Excellent beginner lens and you can upgrade to a sigma 50mm f1.4 later, that's my fav lens to use with my cameras.

If you just want to get a start in photography as a passive hobby I'd recommend a D5xxx

If you believe you'd expand your kit (lens etc.) beyond the basic kit lens and make use of the better controls I'd recommend a D7xxx camera from Nikon. The D7xxx has a much better autofocus system, body is more solid and has some weather sealing (requires the right lens too).

So if you even plan to shoot decent action, check out the D7xxx.

Now if you require high fps to capture action you'd be better served with a Canon like the 7D or it's younger brother. Beware of the limits of Canon sensors though, you tend to get better shadow recovery from Nikon sensors.

If you'd do video as well. Canon. A D750 can give them a run for their money though. Nikon may expand the same features to other DSLRs.

The D300 is basically the same age as a D90 and has more features and is better built. Downside? It uses CF cards only which are more expensive than SD.

Mirrorless is still in its infancy. Anyone who tells you different is either:
1) A Sony/Fuji fanboy
2) A techy more than a photographer (nothing is wrong with that)
3) A sales man
4) Photographer who does more stills (or even video) than action shots.

It has it's place, especially in the hands of Canon shooters who would love to get their hands on Sony sensors for its superiority.

My $0.02
