Not the thumb but another one on my finger. Well that won't happen again.

Hello experts,

I'm still amateur in the picturetakerouting game, and I have a 7 year old Digital Rebel XS. Kit flash, small lens upgrade to 28-135 since my kit lens had some AF motor issues.

I'm doing a bit of food-journalism as a hobby/project, so I'm looking for some new gear.
Most of the photography will be food or food related, so close up/macro and occasional portrait.

Any ideas?
Prefer to score a kit/bundle for < 1000 USD. Camera body with good kit lens (plus the one I already have), external flash and what else would you recommend?

Will be buying in the US when I travel, so links to items in online stores like amazon would be awesomesauce

invest in a 50mm lens....~99USD....even if you don't like it....it'd be a useful tool for any successive camera body you use if you're staying with the canon line...

i bought a rebel 450D in 09 and am still happy with what it puts out...(kit lens and 50mm lens only)

^^I have a crop sensor, and to be honest would recommend a 30ish mm lens as that will give you a better result than the 50mm.

I did pick up a 10-18(?) mm for my crop sensor last week as off to Texas in the morning..let you know how it goes

Canon crop sensor have a 1.6 x , as mentioned before in this thread and else where , on a crop sensor body 50mm is not 50 mm focal length closer to 80 ish . For me using various crop sensor canons, I had the 50mm 1.8 and now the 50mm 1.4 . One of my go too lens for well lighted or low light portrait work.

Good shots Karbon , care to say what L lenses ?

Yongnuo has a 50mm for 50usd I believe and it's an exact copy of the Canon 1.8. Worth a try Imo.

^^ I was comparing the Yongnuo 1.8 to the Canon 1.8, apparently the Yongnuo has a problem with auto focus in live mode which causes the aperture blades to stick.

Experimenting with stuff other than motorsport.
Some shots from rugby NACRA finals today. TT (30) vs Mexico (16)

My second attempt at rugby, big improvement from my first attempt IMO.
Shot in full manual mode with a Nikon D3100/18-55mm, edited and cropped in Lightroom.
I actually have a 55-200, but my buddy has it. Making do with what I've got.

What you guys think?

Looks good man, think subjects, expressions and isolations, 1 and 2 could have alot more impact if you exclude some of the extraneous elements by either crop or zoom.

Subject isolation is a good point, some of the pics have multiple subjects and it's a bit confusing as to where to look.

I really like the lighting though, especially in the last pic.

Couldn't crop too tight with the quality would have been terrible. :(
Thanks for the feedback.

nice rugby shots there, drop the iso to 400 as it was blazing sun
you might not lose much quality when you crop.

I forgot to change my iso yesterday and took some so-so shots panning
the cycling at savannah, caused whiteouts too

So since you have a defined idea of what you want to use your camera for (unlike many people)
Have you thought about going the mirrorless camera route? They are small compact cameras which would be ideal for what you want to do and also the image quality is astonishing. Sony has some great little cameras which can adapt canon lenses also. There is fuji and panasonic and olympus as well. Do some research to see what its about.
If you want to stay with DSLR's you can get the newer models to what you currently have like the t4i or t5i. A macro lens is in order.

I would also highly suggest you get this lens also.

^^ I was lucky as I had not seen the Milkyway for the first few nights and kinda gave up. I met some guys that were semi-pro photographers when I was canoeing down the Rio Grande that had some really good pics (they were there specifically for that reason) and though their setup was really different were able to give me some direction which I think worked out fairly well....in this case wake up really early

T3i (cropped sensor Cannon)
24mm @ f4
ISO 3200 (a bit too high I think, but could not really see that well at the time)
No flash at 30 second exposure.
No Tripod, used a few towels as a beanbag/base.
4AM- after the moon set and I was on my way to hike the Chisos.

I like the picture, but I much prefere wildlife so I usually focus on that..eg roadrunner
