Singapore Altis / Corolla - Any good ? Classic & Elegance

I have been told by at least three mechanics to stay away from the Singapore Toyota Altis that looks like this:
They come in two versions - the Classic and the Elegance. I totally like the features and their designs. However, I have been advised to stay far because of a host os issues with these cars. Can anyone state for sure if they are good and trouble free ?
