The Aqua is a small hatchback carrying the same drivetrain as the Axio hybrid and the Fielder hybrid. It is a small version to the current Prius which carries a more powerful drivetrain. The Aqua has a 1500cc engine, while the Prius carries an 1800 engine. It is known as the Prius C in the US.
The Aqua is selling pretty cheap as a used car in Japan. For around US8,000 you can get one with reasonable mileage. Then all you pay in Customs is TT$40 for processing the documents.
While I have never driven the Aqua, I have plenty experience with Toyota small hatchbacks. Too, I have driven Axio hybrids and hybrids from other manufacturers. From my experience, Toyota Hybrid systems allow you to run on battery power longer than other brands, before the engine cuts in. Remember that Toyota has been producing the Prius for 20 years, which now, is in its third generation. If a vehicle like that can be popular in the US, then that says something.

Peace.
RR.

A friend owns one, she paid around 65k for it. Nice car, comfortable good ride, easy to drive with good visibility, exceptional fuel economy. A bit slower than most econoboxes but well worth it imo. Looking to purchase one soon as well

like most other, im guessing they will be soon enuff

anyone knows if the japanese Prius is teh same as sold in the US?

that would make sourcing parts a whole lot more easier.

The Japanese ones have the 2ZR-FXE engine and P410 tranny, how easy is it to get parts? what parts interchangeable with other Toyotas

Well the aqua is identical to the Prius C sold in the USA so I'm guessing you could get parts easy from there if needed

yea i saw that, Aqua is a Prius C, but with a different (1.5L) engine

Image

thing with the Prius is that I see Wikipedia lists the 2014 model that I am interested in as the Third generation Prius as (XW30; 2009–2015)

however on SBT site I saw that the chassis codes ZV30. region/market difference? US vs JDM. not a toyota man, so apologies if that is a known.

Image

also the dashboard has Japanese text. sales guy at SBT said that it can be changed and they send you the info to change it, "no big matter" his exact words, but I for one dont trust sales ppl. Anyone know if that is true and who does it locally?

Image

looking at the shifter it seems to be a CVT tranny as well.

is there another thread where Prius owners post their mpg and maintenance costs etc?

Just a lil update. My friend has her aqua almost 5 months now and drives daily from Arima to POS. No issues, just did an oil change and the oil was very clean as compared to if changing in a non hybrid. Average 47mpg. Has enough space and is comfortable enough to chauffer 2 kids to school and get to work for her. Given the increase in fuel prices I'm leaning towards getting one as well for daily commute. Traffic drinks gas in my Vitara
