Sub problem(s)! [Pics of Multimeter Readings]

Postby zorced » November 20th, 2011, 5:16 pm

Ok 2nrs just bought a used sub and it has the following problems:

- its DVC4ohm and when i hook it up to two 4ohm stable channels it immediately sends the amp into protect without a sound.

I tried my other sub on each channel and it worked 100%, so definitely the amp is fine.

- when I wire one out of the two coils it will play very distorted and you could hear a little rattle as well with hardly any volume. after a few seconds you'll smelling burning from the sub.

So what can you guys make of these problems and is it repairable?

what brand sub? and a simple cheap way to check is to use a battery .. a D-cell or 9v battery and test the coils independantly ...
a multimeter can be used to test for continuity as well as the ohms of the coil .

Get your hands on a multimeter and measure the DC Resistance of each coil. It should be between 3 - 4ohms each.

Don't touch the cone while taking measurements.. don't even let wind blow against the cone.. (try it and see what happens!)

ok will try to get my hands on one.
i bought it for the 8" box really, which i heard was built by you 3stage. (the one u did for justwhatyouseeing)

he had it so cheap with the sub i decided to take both instead of the box alone, i didnt mind usin an audiopipe for the while.... but i dont think even he knew the sub had probs cuz he had it put down for a while and offered to demo on my amp but i told him i had wires from the amp at 4ohm mono and he said he had it playing on a 4channel as well.

But it didnt play then, so we figured it was the way he had it wired in the box, cuz i didnt think the man would come up all the way on my side for nun.

So i say when i reach home i'd just rewire it properly, and thats when i discovered the probs.

if its out of my way to repair it i might just exchange it for sumn cheap.

Do the test with the multi meter.. that will show if anything wrong with the coils.

Make sure the pigtail wires are not touching the basket too..

if the sub is out of box inspect it carefully while moving the cone evenly up and down and listen for any coil rubbing noise..the cone should move freely by hand..

Real busy these days with work and exams man.
So far I just described the problem to my electrician he said most likely the coils scorched and would have to recoil (how much does this cost neway?).
monday i will get the actual readout on the multimeter..

I would give it back to you for a lil $100 u know. I hardly have time these days to see about that.
it would come like u got $300 for d box which is pretty good.

just as suspected. Dunno how, but the voice coils gone.
1.9 on one coil, 1.2 on the other

lol, those look more like dual 2ohm coils!

1) Nice multimeter
2) Sub seems to be dual 2 - your amp may not have been stable into that impedance and went into protect
3) There could be a mechanical defect of the sub causing the smell and noises.

Sub is not dual 2, it indicates Dual 4ohm on the terminals and model # on the magnet.

try and series bridge the coils and test on one half of your 4channel (4ohm load) and see if it works. It wont kill
